Has anyone heard any more about whether Hidden Valley will open back up to climbers anytime soon, or if anything can be done?

I spoke to a good friend of the land owner last weekend. Koma has no intention of opening it up to the public. Can you blame him? He opened access to the public. But so many were not respecting his rules. Now he and his good friends have the crag to themselves. No gumbies! I have not climbed there in 5 years and completely respect Koma and his decision.

It is understandable, but a shame. I moved here from Richmond, and I am considerably closer to plenty of other areas, but it sure would've been nice to have a close by place for afternoon climbing a few days a week. Oh well, just figured I'd check. Thanks for the info.

I'm still pretty new to the area, but I've been climbing for about 10 years. If you guys ever need a partner, please let me know. I'm still trying to meet climbers in the area

I cannot give any other info about unless I get permission from people who are doing projects there. It is a nice area, a somewhat far hike. But there is some crack climbs, I would say 5.8 or 5.9 (but i am not an expert).

Gentlepeople, I am looking to buy a pair of women's climbing shoes and I need them by Sunday. I'll be passing through Abingdon that morning. Highlands doesn't have any that size. Can you help? Even a loan would be great. US 8-1/2 - 9. Thank you very much, Roy Crawford

As far as I know it is closed and will remain closed. Some friends of mine know Koma and climb up there, but if you aren't invited you will probably never see HV.

Nope. Been climbing since 95. I was asked to update any Hidden Valley threads by Gus. Feel free to talk to Koma, but you won't hear anything different. |

There's nothing to keep in the "down low". There is no legal access. If you would like to call Gus to discuss this further, I'll be happy to PM you his number. And I've been climbing since 95, and the earliest thread was in the late 90s. What does time climbing have to do with communicating updated information? Nothing.

I used to climb Hidden Valley back when I was a student at Emory and Henry in 98. It's an absolute shame what people do to a great place. However, that being said, I don't like a high horse. Dillard's lot west of HV Rd is about 30 acres. If I remember that cliff line is at least .5 miles long.... humm... check out the Washington Co., Va GIS system, it's available to the public. I respect Koma and Dillard, but they don't own or get to control the entire mountain. With the exception of their lot all the other private land along that cliff line stops at or below the base of the cliffs,,, heck, the cliffs extend into Russell Co.... Get a map, respect the private property Dillard, and others in the area own and go around it. Access will much more difficult without trespassing, but for locals it is worth it; besides, what better than a difficult bushwack approach to keep out the crowds.
