I recently had to extract a Smilie nut out of a solid jam. The only way was to give it a great tub. Now, after getting it out, i noticed the black shrink wrap around the join was torn a bit, not fully, but a fair bit. Is this bad, should i retire it?

I dont own smiley nuts, however I do think the shrink wrap is just cosmetic. The swage is the important part of the cable, if its good your nut should be just fine.

I have Smileys and I would say the black shrink wrap is cosmetic. I wouldn't worry about. Shrink wrap is not going to protect you during a whipper.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt the need to snicker when he saw the subject line... Mike... --[snicker] shrink rap your nuts...[snicker]

It is an easy fix. Go to an electrical supply and buy shrink tubing. With a heat gun, (like the ones for stripping paint), warm up the tubbing and it will shrink to 1/2 of its original size. It comes in many different colors so you can color code as you see fit. The tubing is cheap, bout a buck a foot. A 1.5 inch chunk should be plenty.

I used a match on a very similar project. Worked fine, just smelled really bad, do it outside.

Unless you want to cut the wire and then reswage it you aren't going to be able to re-heatshrink your nuts.... Dude don't worry about it, it is only cosmetic and if you really feel that you need to have the heatshrink on then buy a replacement nut. Besides, the heat shrink is kinda useless in my opinion it just makes nuts take up way more space on a racking biner. Paul

All the heat shrink tubing does is keep the nut's cable rigid and cover up the swage so it doesn't snag on things. An easy fix would be to wrap over the swage with electrical tape. The rip in the tubing has no effect on the structural integrity of the piece. Don't worry about it too much.

Why not a hair dryer for a heat gun? Did this to remove stickers from motorcycle, people usually use a heat gun for this.

I would replace the heat shrink if the strands were about to seperate. The heat shrink holds them together so you have a nice loop for your biner to clip into. Also, the heat shrink keeps the prickly ends of the steel cable from prickleing you and your gear. If it is exposed, replace the heat shrink. I have some I can send you. Just send me a seld adressed stamped envelope. I use a lighter to shrink the stuff.

So let me make sure I've got it... The shrink wrap keeps the long part of the unit rigid and helps keeps them from snagging on things... that makes sense, but I don't think wrapping my nuts in electrical tape is necessary! But at least we can be safe knowing that the stuctural integrity of the entire peice is not effected when the swage is shrink-wrapped or taped... I'm sorry... sometimes the lingo is just too double-sided to pass up!

OH OH, I've got some more!!! ...I prefer my nuts to be uncovered (for lack of a better word.) Sure they'll get beat up and weathered, but even old nuts are good nuts! ...And if you start to wonder about their integrity in old age, only use them when you have to! ...And of course, for poor saps like us, new nuts are hard to come by, so use the old ones as long as possible! I'd better stop.
