A while back, I was talking with Yvon Chouinard and telling him how I had sold one of his 1972 catalogs on Ebay for $285, as well as all my old gear for outrageous prices. We were reminissing, and he asked me if I had ever come across a Chouinard firewood splitter. Seems that he made log splitters for a while, and would love to have one of them again. Anybody know of one? Would love to buy it and give it to Yvon...

I worked for Phil Teeter in the Mountain Shop in the '70s and whatever Chouinard said was gold-plated. Phil always liked to have a fire going in the wood stove in the back so he ordered a few of the wood splitters for the shop. They were different from anything you can imagine. Instead of an axe or hatchet style form, think of a mini hoe with a sharp edge and rails on the side. It was a fireside kindling splitter so it about the size of a small hatchet.
The damn thing didn't work at all. It didn't have enough weight to really carry through the wood and even when it did start a good split, it bottomed out and couldn't completely split the log.
It worked about as well as the Chouinard ClimbAxe.
