Hi All,
I'm making my first trip to RRG Memorial weekend with 3 others and none of us are terribly experienced at Lead, so we're seeking advice with regard to Top roping at RRG.
I'm very experienced with setting top rope but am unfamiliar with the rules / conditions / approaches at RRG. Is there a specific area where Top Roping is okay or is it generally expected that a lead climber lead and set the top rope? I've lead before, but will be with climbers who have not belayed lead.
Please note, we're absolutely mindful of the bolts in place and will be bringing "leave behind" rap rings so as not to cause any additional wear to the gear in place.
All feedback would be greatly appreciated.

John, I'm not sure how to take your response.
Are your remarks to the extent that there is not any area(s) for top roping, where you can safely set a top rope.
I welcome clarification.

RRG is a pretty bad place to try and top-rope without first leading the route. The only place I know for certain has walk up access where you could rig a TR is Practice Wall in Muir Valley. This wall has maybe 10 route you could TR without leading.
I'm with John though. You should probably find somewhere else, or go with someone more experienced. Hiring a guide would be a sensible option as well. Plenty of great guides in the Red.

I appreciate the responses. I was fearful that may be the case.
My group is very excited about climbing in RRG, but short on Lead experience. I've personally led 5.9 and 5.10, but it's been a while. I'm not in the shape I was then, and I dont intend to push it in unfamiliar territory.
If anyone has suggestions or interest in joining for some fun and leads, we're coming with plenty of gear and quick links so as not to wear on existing gear. Post climb beer and brats would be on us :-)

I'm not sure what you are getting at, but you shouldn't be leaving quicklinks around. Why do you think you'll need to leaving any, let alone plenty?

So you're not very experienced leading and your belayers have no lead belay experience, but you are excited to go somewhere with little or no top-roping? I don't want to discourage adventure, but you really should think about some other locations. RRG has very few moderate sport climbs, and those are always busy.

Dude, help out a climber and hire a guide. At least for the first day until you get a feel for the style of climbing and rating. Bruisebrothers in Muir Valley has the softest ratings I've ever seen, so you might be safe to lead 7-s and 8-s there.

Agree. Either hire a guide, or go somewhere else. I'd hate to see another accidents thread.

Wow...nice reception.
I whole heartedly disagree with most of the responses to your inquiry.
I've been climbing Red River Gorge for over 25 years. There are plenty of easy climbs...many of them bolted. RRG is a great beginner's place. You'll find lot's of fun easy routes. Grab a guide book and start an adventure!

Does anyone know of any good guide companies to help myself and another get to know our way around RRG - seeing as top roping for beginners seems to not to be the way to go?
