Hi, A few friends and I want to climb out by Elizabeth Furance. We have been top roping at Great Falls for a while but do not know how to lead climb. Are there any climbs around Buzzard Rocks that we can set up a top rope anchor system without leading up to the anchor point first? We would like to climb between a 5.7 and 5.9 Any suggestions around that area would be good too. Thanks! Amy

Hi Amy, I am not sure about Buzzard Rocks, but the one time I was out in that area was with a guide who set up top rope for me at the Roadside Crag. He definitely hiked around and up in order to do so, since I was in no position to lead belay at that time. As I recall, the area was not particularly stunning in terms of views--on the plus side, though, the approach was super short and it was shady the entire time. Hope this helps! Sylvia

I've only been there once, but this is the climb you'll want to do: http://www.rockclimbing.com/...ous_Flake_17632.html The approach trail follows along the top of the cliff, so you can rig an anchor before descending. I'm afraid I don't remember what was required for the anchor, but the climb was easy enough to locate; just look for the tallest, cleanest line there. ***Exercise extreme caution*** if youre using a standard 60m rope. 50m won't cut it, 70m would be better. If you choose to rapp, make sure you extend the anchor low enough for both ends to touch (& knot them); also knot the belayer's end of the rope while climbing. This route is a rope-stretcher- the route database lists it at 110'. Have fun & play it safe. -Carl

Hi Amy, Did you end up climbing at Elizabeth Furnace earlier this summer? I've heard rumors that it is closed, but I think that people might be confusing it with the "Roadside Crag" at the Red, which is closed. I just wanted to confirm. k.

Hi, I did make it out there in June and the area around Anonymous Flake was certainly open. I havent been back since so I dont know about Roadside Crag, but I have trouble imagining the upper areas with the long hike in would be closed. Carl gave some great tips and it sure is beautiful up there! Amy
