I don't know whether climbing is pointless or not, but I'm sure that this thread is.

Although I bet if we could somehow find a way to build something that could outrun the sun as it expands*** there would be a point to that!

I think this year I have spent just as much time climbing as I have been looking for partners. I have spent a lot of time climbing...

What does it mean!

Of course it's pointless...

But it's SOOOO AWESOME!!!1!1!!!!

Does having fun count as "a point?" How 'bout charging up your self-confidence, expanding your body-awareness, exposing yourself to the beauty of nature... Do those count as "points?"

If you have to ask, then you wouldn't understand.

Climbing is a form of conspicuous consumption and conspicuous leisure. So, as far as keeping up with the jones goes, it most certainly has a point.

OK there's more to "the point" of life on the rocks!

I visit the mountains frequently, to hike, scramble, and climb, and also backpack overnight. Exploring involves challenge, which means building skills, knowledge, and confidence.

These mountain activities teach me about goals and strategies, and how to apply them to life and living. Then I take this wisdom back to the city, and apply it to my home, work, and social life.

So exploring and challenge bring concrete benefits, as well as positive attitude about job and relationships. And it's fun! And I'm hardly finished -- it keeps getting better!

That's "the point".

(Edit to change some words)
