I also just found out this wall exists and haven't climbed in about 2.5 years. Sounds like we're about the same level. I have some friends who would like to get out of the city and try some climbing soon. We're not sure when we'd be able to go - maybe within the next 30 days or so. Do you know if this wall is bolted? Can you walk around to the top and hang a rope through the anchor? Top rope only? I don't feel too confident sport climbing yet.

The PI wall is bolted.

You can probably hike up and around, but I've never seen anyone do it. I don't think it'd be easy to run the rope through the anchors from above as I seem to recall they're a good ways below the top, but I could be mistaken.

One thing I won't forget is the garbage train that comes by every now and then, man that stink is horrendous, especially if there's no breeze, it just sits around and festers.

The top of PI wall is pretty easily accessed from the downstream end or the ramp about 2/3 of the way to the upstream end. There are double sets of anchors at some points at the top where you do a short rap from the upper anchor to the lower anchor in order to set up a toprope.

I wish I checked this earlier!! I live about 10 minutes away and I don't mind the cold weather. I have a rope, draws, and biners, and the bolts at the top make top roping a cinch. Let me know!

the lines are all incredibly overbolted so don't be too worried about leading...definitely worth checking out for the setting if not for the climbing...recommend crossing to the other side of the river at the end of the day and checking out the little towns and nice views...i have a pdf guide if you're interested..pm and i'll send it

I live at the Gunks but work downstate, I'm game for Monday or Wednesday afternoons. I don't mind cold, I like sharing the rope with good folks, and I'm a very safe belayer. I climb well to 5.8 but I occasionally climb a bit harder, check my profile for experience over the past six years.

I just heard about this place. Did you check it out? I'd like to go if you want to climb sometime soon? I'm busy this weekend (Gunks) but next weekend I'm open.

I work in Chester and live n. of Newburgh. It would be great to climb the PI wall. I moved here from Austin last year and used to climb bolted limestone every week. Mark

I've climbed PIW for the last several years, solo, with partners. But I just drove down there today and now there are "No Parking" signs all over the road and especially at the end of the road, near the marina parking lot. Warnings of vehicles towed away, etc. I asked at the McDonalds and a guy said he thought they had posted "No Trespassing" signs. I've climbed alongside cadets, previous seasons, without any problems, but probably only went there once or twice last year. So tonight I emailed a lady at the Academy who is in charge of the climbing program, according to some other climbing site. I asked her the current status of Poison Ivy. Waiting for reply . . .

Got my email reply from the West Point coach today. PIW is open to civilians, no problem. Just have to walk further to get there, I guess . . .

Would love to get my hands on a copy of that pdf guide as well. Please let me know if you get one.

I only live about 35-40 minutes away - i can meet up most afternoons by about 4PM to get in a quick session until dark (or we can continue climbing by headlamp Smile ).

I went there last week for a few hours in the late afternoon. Several civilians were climbing, so no problems. I fed the meters at the top of the hill on the main street and just walked down. Only 2 hours of metered parking, though. I mis-timed my last climb and got back late, but didn't get a ticket that time . . . Next time I think there's some unmetered parking further up the road. I wouldn't park at the McDonalds unless I bought something :) Even then, I don't know how they feel about cars there for a few hours. Didn't check out the .pdf guide. The coach told me that a copy is on their "climbing website." My level of climbing is pretty limited, so I don't really care about the ratings. The climbs themselves have painted names and the bolts make the lines clear enough.

An update today on the parking. The operators of the marina have put up a sign for daily parking in their lot for $5.00. I talked to them about climbers using the lot, and that's what they wanted to do, since the police have marked the road "No parking." One of the owners said that he will be opening some bathrooms soon. $5.00 isn't bad, considering how long that hill looks after a day of climbing :)

Hey all

I'm a little more than an hour from this wall. I have plenty of draws and a rope, just need a partner. I'll climb anything up to 10a probably, it's been a while to be honest.
