I want to get a new line (as i want to go longer) but I noticed there is a number of different materials to choose from. ie. Polyester, Nylon and in both flat or tubular or even a threded. Are they all possible or are some just not worth bothering with.

well my current line is 20m so i would like a line that will do from 20 to 40m.

I would go with Type 18 or Mantra. Mantra stretches a lot less than T18 which will allow you to rig the line closer to the ground. Those are pretty much the best two options on the market right now. If you really wanted to spend some cash, you could get some Spider Silk. That stuff has almost to stretch. But again, it is really expensive.

Sorry so late but I hope you didnt go buy t-18 or any other flat webbing for a 20m line.
The deal is you will be out-growing this very soon. Just get tublar is much cheaper; approx $0.25/ft v's $0.7, $1.00, and $3.00. I'm sure you are still using a primitive system. The extra passes means that you are using more webbing thus paying more. What I did was use tubular until I passed 50m. Of course you will have to scale up to a pulley system prior to this.
I regularly rig a 50M tubular, and wanted to go bigger so now im using 63m T-18.
Also flat webbings are more easily damaged by line lockers so it is suggested that you invest in non ring based lockers adding to the expense.
Get 50m of tubular it will only set you back $40 and will last you until you can collect pulley system gear. Once you gear up and master the 50m line then invest in flat.
