Thanks :)

Firstly, the frequent switching in question form is difficult to follow and could easily cause incorrect responses. Secondly, what does sexual confidence have to do with belaying? And finally, the lack of a "neutral" option is irritating.

No validity. Only pancakez.

As asked in the other thread on the same subject with the same hinckey survey, certified by who?

Secondly, are you tracking the abandonment rate when people either:
* realize how long and repetitive the survey is (without knowing up front how much time it will take)

- or -

* encounter the question about sexual encounters.

In short, your survey sucks.

The idea behind that is to increase validity through error filtering. The idea is that if the test proctor writes duplicate questions in inverse wording and the respondent answers the same to both questions, then the respondent is just Christmas-treeing the test or hurrying through it and therefor his or her response should be discarded. It's used by professional test proctors worldwide in personality tests. But the OP went way too far with it. You are only supposed to use about 1% of the questions for that purpose, not 50%! I am not sure that my sexual confidence is relevant to belaying though.

Yeah. When are psychologists going to learn that that idea backfires.

In reply to:

Yep, especially considering that some of the questions make questionable assumptions about proper belay technique.

I'm pretty confident that the people who wrote this survey either don't know how to belay very well or wrote it for novices.

And last but not least, we are now firmly entrenched in a world where certifications have replaced qualifications.

A sad day indeed.

This sentence missing a verb.

In reply to:
I feel that I can continue the cycle.

What cycle are you referring to here? There is little context here to determine what it is you are asking.

Repetitiveness has already been mentioned, but it bears repeating. Also, I found that the swapping of positively toned and negatively toned questions made me have to pay more attention to the survey than I would have preferred. Given that it is a crappy survey to begin with, I don't want to have to re-read your questions so that I get whether you were asking about my confidence or my lack thereof of every bloody question. Again, crappy survey. I want those 5 minutes of my life back.

I got halfway through the second page and couldn't take it any longer.

I've got better web-surfing to do than this.

I am never intimidated by the thought of a sexual encounter.

Why else would I go to a climbing gym where there is like 50:1 ratio of guys to girls.

And I feel so much better knowing that this is for a belay test...waite a minute here I'm getting mixed signals here.

Itīs the chicken and egg situation, someone had to certify the first person without being certified themselves.
It isnīt standard practice in Europe to have belay tests anyway, usually you just sign a waiver saying you are competent and thatīs it. Iīve been asked once if I could climb in Antwerp by a spotty youth young enough to be my grandson and convinced him verbally of my competence.
We donīt have floor walkers either in the parts of the world I frequent, Iīve never seen one.

That might depend on where in Europe, I know I've had to take a belay test at one gym (wall) in England, and I'm pretty sure I've had to take a belay test at a couple of others in England.

Could well be so, havenīt been to a wall in England since 1975 or thereabouts.
Is England still part of Europe anyway? :-)

I was thinking the same thing about England myself, but as a North American, didn't feel it was quite my place to raise the issue. Aren't they kind of half-European, more one foot in, one foot out, and never quite sure which way they're going? :)

Itīs been like that since France vetoed Britain application to join in 1963 and again 1967, now we are in we like to return the insult by not being as cooperative as the others would like!
And unlike the other countries we still have considerable ties with our ex-empire and have the option of forming a power bloc with them instead of grovelling to the Spanish/French whatever, or of course with the USA since at least they (and the Indians) speak English.
The increasing pressure to create a federal Europe will probably see a few others joining the Brits in straddling the fence!
