Okay ladies (and guys, I guess--if you keep it CLEAN!)... just taking an informal poll. Which names do you prefer (& why) when referring to the female gender. Here's a quick list to choose from:
Mrs, babe, bird, bride, broad, chick, chicken, chica, companion, dame, debutante, doll, gal, gentlewoman, girl, girlfriend, inamorata, kitten, lady, lass, love, lover, maid, maiden, mama, mate, matron, miss, mistress, moll, nymph, old lady, paramour, partner, pigeon, rib, she, skirt, spinster, spouse, squaw, sweetheart, tomato, tootsie, virgin, wife.
THAT list was taken from entering 'female' into the thesaurus section of dictionary.com.
My personal favorites are gal, chick, chica and lady.
What do you think? What 'title' do you use to informally address your female friends?
FYI: I'm taking this poll because I'd like to have a climbing website someday geared towards women. Searching for domain names right now. If anyone suggests a nasty name, there will certainly be a public lynching and/or stoning!!!

There was a point where I called women "lady" quite a bit. I picked it up from Tiny Toons I think.
Quite a few "ladies" didn't like it. They felt it was demeaning and said it carried implications of being prissy, uptight and incapable of doing anything for themselves other than winning a husband.
At that point I usually laughed and then they often left. I went on to call other people lady. (Yes I'm a slow learning when I'm enjoying myself.)
Somehow, though, I don't think they'd mind another lady calling them "lady."

O.S.! I thought I was being suav--eee by using dictionary.com. Of course, that's not MY list of fem adjectives. Please contribute.
BTW, the copyright date of my last purchased dictionary is, cough, cough, 1983. How dare I open it. It'll soon be a collector's item!

Waaaaait a minute.
As stated before, that was a list generated from dictionary.com. Certainly some of those adjectives strike a nerve with me, too.
Personally, I've never addressed my gal pals as 'partner', or 'tootsie'. It's just a list (unedited) that I got on-line. The question comes back to... how do you affectionately address your female friends?
For example...
Hey ,chica (ode to lilred) waaaaaasssaaabe?!

I tend to call my girlfriends "chica", "lady", or "babe/baby".
But I certainly wouldn't use those terms when talking to someone I didn't know!

As for me generating a climbing website for women, that'll probably never happen. Guess I'm just dreamin' of other fun things to work on, rather than putting together my business site (what I should be doing, instead of playing on rc.com!!!).
Thanks for the input, though.
I think I refer to most women as 'gals'. To me, it's informal and friendly, with minimal chance of offending someone. Most likely, a 'gal' is your pal.

How about sheila/s and I refer to my wife when in company as the misses.
Umm dunno whether I orta say this next one in fear of the lynch mob of the female persuasion but I have heard one of the girls being referred to as "The boat anchor" of course you would never hear me saying that, maybe "The ball and chain".

I call my female friends chicas, girls, ladies, or lasses. the last just cuz someone called me that once and I was like..."oooh, I'm a lass...say it again..." he had a nice accent.

gal pals at the gym always call each other chica, sometimes woman. guy pals call the gals chica, too, anything else, we'd probably do a double take!

I almost always use chick. But lately I've broadened my horizon's to include- Lady(usually in terms of "crazy Lady"), gal, girl, or Miss(when I'm working I call them miss or hey you ) I guess if these offend someone then, They're alittle to PC for me.
I call guys...Bro, brother(usually only other firemen), dude, buddy, slick . So I guess I'm just a slang using kind of guy!

I tend to use "baby" and "girl" as informal with friends (and some business relationships), and "ladies" in formal situations when it comes to work. Of course, being a slanderous butthead, I also call a group of guy friends "ladies" when out climbing or golfing. i.e. "What are the ladies thinking of climbing today?"

Seriously, chick is the one I really don't like. Other than that it doesn't really matter to me....just don't call me spinster.

I usually call my female friends girls. "I am getting together with the girls tonight." I also might use baby, just jokingly, like "hey baby". Sometimes chica is used. I am not really offended by names as long as they are said in a positive sense. If you call me girl or baby in a negative or patronizing sense, I would probably be peeved!

I have been known to use chick, chica, woman, or muffinbut. (Just kidding on the last one) My partner insists on calling me "hooker". He is about the only person who could get away with that w/o getting slugged. He's usually the one complaining about the heat, the approach, or whatever though, so he's the "sally" in the group.

Lady, Chick, Chicky as in:
"going out with my lady friends"
"Did you just see what that chick just did!"
"Hey Chicky, you want to go climbing today?"
For guys I don't know I tend to call them Buddy, as in:
"Damn, what's that buddy doing climbing under me?!"
When I said that in Edmonton the fellow got offended. Oh, fellow is another that I use.
