pyramid wrote: I find it hilarious that the AMGA guide comes up with this huge dissertation to defend their position, these guides are attempting to make their work seem complicated with fancy terminology and create confusion, much like lawyers and doctors have done to their professions. Thus creating a need for their services. I in fact know and have known past presidents of the AMGA and we have discussed the policies of the AMGA for years. The AMGA makes money by signing up people to take their courses, it is in their immediate interests to have loads of students paying huge prices. Soon many 'guides' will not be able to find work because there will be a glut of guides in this country, seems like everybody is a guide these days. BINGO You nailed it far better than I. One of my principal complaints for years has been the stranglehold the AMGA has had on the industry, not too mention the massive conflict of interest. Well put. Thank you for making my point in a far more concise manner than I could muster. One other point. The AMGA has become nothing more than a guide school with a choke hold on the land managers. Period. And boy do their minions walk in lockstep with their "philosophy". This is the very reason I quit Search and Rescue. We went from a team of climbers, to the NASAR SAR TECH 2 (or whatever). Suddenly I was having to certify people who were overweight, out of shape, and had zero experience on the rock. But, as long as they could tie a knot or two, rig a simple system, I had to tie in with them on technical rescues. No thanks.

That SPI class is no different.

pyramid wrote: The AMGA is so over-rated, all you need is to take and pass your single pitch toprope course and then you can take clients out toproping. I live in an AMGA infested town, and most are a joke. The rock guide certification is reasonable, and the IFMGA certification is pretty inclusive from what I have heard. But I agree the SPI certification is a joke. If you want to see some more serious certifications, check out SPRAT and IRATA level III, for commercial heights professionals. Those certifications are far more intense than anything the AMGA offers. In order to qualify to take the level III test, you need 1,000 hours of documented experience working as a certified level I or II worker under a level III supervisor. If the AMGA had that requirement, things might be a bit different.

It was a joke. I know guides take themselves pretty seriously, but come on lighten up.

Yup this is true. My guess is that we will never hear the true details. For one, guide schools absolutely don't want their clients getting hurt at the hands of their guides. Second, they certainly don't want the guides decking either. It's not good for business. Hope the guys ok. 60 feet is a long fall. I took a 50 footer on an aid climb once and figured I was going to the deck. I was 300 feet off the ground at the time, but I just kept going and going, and feeling the gear ripping. You'd be surprised, that kind of fall is not over as fast as you might think. I had more than enough time to contemplate my fate.

Yup - In addition to not being allowed in this forum (especially the A & I forum), homophobic slurs are lame. I don't care if it's a longstanding tradition. It's still lame. So, all posts containing or quoting the slur have been hidden.
