Sure. Because it is something I don't want to do (die) while I'm climbing. Or, any other time for that matter. I don't think I think about it too often while climbing, only while rappelling from high up. It crosses my mind, but I don't think about or dwell on it. I'm a pretty damn safe climber, so there usually isn't too much of a chance for it. Steve

the only time i ever think about dying is when i'm checking my knots and ropes. When i'm doing moves i'm focused on doing just that. It's when i clip into belay or something that i kind of panic untill i check it 2 or 3 times to make sure it's ok and i go through some senarios in my head untill i know what i did is right and safe.

Dingus: age, "wisdom", family - yeah, they all play a part. But nothing cuts through that testosterone haze quite like going to the funeral of a "safe" climber friend. GO

I have those "scary" moments. Not life threatening ones, but like the ones you get on rides at what not. I love climbing and fear is just something that comes with it. *doeing his best to keep this 16 year old body alive. Pride

Oh and before i forget, i have this quote, among hundreds on my school folders. "He who thinks too much about extending his life, can never fully enjoy it." Then here is a nother one by Hellen Keller: "Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run then outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing" Pride [ This Message was edited by: climbingpride on 2003-01-11 21:24 ]

No, absolutely not. I worry about the pain I'll feel before I die.

I don't think about dying, per se. (except in those long hours before dawn, before starting up a huge, scary unknown intimidating wall that makes me dry heave just to think about walking to the BASE of the thing, what in the h#ll am I doing here and who is this madman I'm going to tie in with? Maybe it will storm. Yeah, that's it. Maybe it will storm and we won't even have to walk up to the base of the thing? Maybe my partner will be sick in the morning. That would be good... That way the goat's off my back. no guilt, no worries... What if we both just look at each other, honestly admit the terror, and decide to hike out and head for the bar in Lone Pine? Or the Hot Springs? Queasy stomach... maybe I AM getting sick? That would be a relief, at this point. Just crawl out of the tent, puke, and announce to my partner that we can sleep in in the morning... yep, that's what I'll do.) Sunrise, and the waiting is over. The last knots are tied and checked, rock-paper-scissors has decided who gets that huge, loose-looking roof three pitches up, final retching of sour bile into the dust was 15 minutes ago. Time now, to DO. YES! Life is good. Got me? Climbing! Brutus

I think about it when I'm putting up any type of protection, and especially when someone else is doing it. I think, "If I don't do it the right way, I could die." "Gotta triple check it so he/she can't possible die." I think about it when there's some jag off at the rock. While I'm climbing, I don't worry about death (unless that jag off is still there) because it's been taken care of before I get on the climb, before I move to the next bolt, or when I'm belaying. Worry about safety first. Death comes when safety is put second (to all those jag offs).

Think about all the safety preparation before the climb, but when I'm on the climb my mind is empty. I'm always amazed to hear people ask about climbing and the thought of death. It is more dangerous to drive to the crag then to climb at one. Play safe. Play hard.

I think about my next two or three moves, and the possible falls that i could take, but i never mention the d word to myself. That reality is always somewhere in my mind when i climb. That is why safety is the most important rule on the rocks. It allows me to challenge myself, enjoy the sport, and still come home to my wonderful wife and monster kids (who are starting to climb, also). -Berg

I think about it before starting to climb. I triple check all my gear. I talk to my belayer and tell her I love her (she's my girlfriend) and to keep an eye on me at all times. I kiss her and start climbing and stop thinking about dying but rather concentrate on my next move... 'til I'm back again.

People always ask me if I'm concerned about dieing while doing, what they call stupid sports ie - rock climbing, bull riding, ski diving, etc. They say I need to think more about my wife and kids before going off to do those things. My favorite say is: It's not that people die too young, it's that they died before they got to really live. I think your days are already numbered so you should live them to the fullest. And as far as my wife and kids go, I take every precaution I can to make these sports as safe as they can be so I can get back home to them at the end of the day. And this may sound bad but if I were to fall from a wall I would rather die than to be paralized for the rest of my life.

Safety, safety, safety.. Just think about your gear and your setup before you climb and you shouldn't have to worry about death. Now I know we can't have complete control on some of those wicked trad routes we all love, but just climb at your level, and climb with people you can trust and you don't have to worry about death. Besides thinking about living is so much more fun.

Well lets see here, of course dieing is always in the back of my mind. It has to be. The trick is to keep it way back there so as not to interfere with your enjoyment of the experience. Dieing is in the back of my mind in everyday events as well. Take driving for instance. Because of the real possibility of fatal injuries, I drive safer. I check my mirrors often, try not to exceed the speed that my car and/or driving skills can handle, and dont run red lights. Taking certain precautions in your activities reduces the hold death has on you, but the possibility is always there. RJ

I really son't think about death climbing. I think about how much fun I am having out in nature with friends and family. Climb safely, and everything will be alright. I know something bad could happen, but I don't think about it cause might restrict my level of climbing.

I think of dying....after I've done something incredibly stupid because I'm not paying attention. Death is mentioned every now and then just to emphasize the importance of safety. zap
