Hi all,
I have been saving my pennies for an OS trip to learn some alpine climbing and I will be coming up with some work leave this time next year.
Any recommendations for courses and locations? I already trad climb and dabble in BC skiing - so I'm fine with ropework, rock climbing, placing protection, and have a general knowledge on winter camping. I guess I will probably therefore benefit the most from private instruction rather than re-covering those basics in a group course?
My budget will be around USD$8000 all up, and will have to include flights, accommodation (I don't mind roughing it in a tent or very budget accommodation), meals, course costs, and any personal gear I need (I already have trad / BC Skiing gear that I suppose could supplement some of the mountaineering specific gear I would need for the course).
I have been looking at Canada or Alaska, but any other destinations that would be good for mountaineering around March would be great.
Timewise, I would like to get as much climbing done as possible, and I have about 2-3 months of leave saved up. If I can do a course or two for the first couple of weeks then hook up with another alpine climber willing to cope with me for the rest of the time that would be great. If not, I would also not mind spending a month alpine climbing, then for the rest of the time just dirtbag it and go trad climbing somewhere else.

Must be pretty bad because I'd never consider a trip to 'Murica as overseas, I drive across that border all the time.

Sorry Ive been away and couldn't reply.
Home for me is Australia.
I had a look at one company in Canmore Canada that offers a 3 month mountain skills semester that covers a lot of topics.

The Alpine Club of Canada offers all levels of mountaineering training some assuming you have know knowledge and others assuming you know everything. The ones I've seen are for around $1000 but for some reason they seem to discount them 50% if you're an ACC Toronto member (maybe other sections too?)
Anyways, look into them.
