Weekend Report:

Did a shake-down hike in the Sespe Wilderness this weekend. Figured it'd be good to do a hike we've done before to measure up against how we were last year this time. Only thing is, we allotted 2 days for a 3 day hike. Pretty aggressive, if I say so.

Saturday we did 3,200 feet of gain in 9 miles with a total distance of 13 miles before camp for the night. Total time 7 hours. Arrived at camp to find that the place was trashed. Detritus all over and idiots had ripped bushes from everywhere for firewood. I spent 2 hours picking shit up and redistributing giant branches (green wood) back into the woods. Cleaned the fire pit; and dug a giant hole where I buried 35 beer bottles. I assume that this was caused by horse-packers because the amount of crap could have only been brought in by stock. I am still very upset.

The camp also has signs of recent bear activity, and I was extra careful about everything I did so that it would deter any future bears (though it's unlikely that any change will be imminent).

Talking and thinking Saturday, we decided that we were going to get up at pre-dawn and make it to the trailhead before 1:00. 14 miles. We did it in 5 hours. The last 4 miles in the rain, which sucked.

Drove up to Los Olivos and tasted wines until 5:00 and drove home.

I'm excited about the Pomegranate addition and am going to search out another fruit tree this weekend to add some more variety. The Lemon and Bay leaf came with the property and are thriving trees; everything else is mine.

So many food options!

Awesome! I'll only have a small patio at the place Matt and I are moving into, but it will at least get more sunlight than my current patio. Hoping I can get some of my current plants to come back and make get at least a good herb garden going

we didn't get out climbing at the beach spot, though. The park has stopped all climbing there. Bolts can't be trusted due to the salt air.

We were bummed, but we hit the beach and went snorkeling later instead. The next day, another beach, and two seafood restaurants.

I didn't want to come home...again.

I read it just fine, yet when you mentioned Americans specifically, you singled out one nationality when in fact it probably applies to a great many, including your very own.

My wife, who is a kind, gentle soul, actually asked me if we should get some "protection" for our upcoming road trip.

Nope, not going there. Like the saying goes, "If you carry bivy gear, you will bivy." The last thing I need is to get in a situation where I even begin to think, "just shoot the bastard." I'd rather take my chances and not have that in my quiver.

Can you use pepper spray to season a meal?

As your attorney, I advise you to buy a full sized .357 revolver, strap it to your thigh and don't take any guff from those fucking swine. And if you have any trouble, remember, you can always send a telegram to the right people...

Funny that. The local sporting goods store was constantly out of 22 and 223 ammo. not that I own a gun, just checking out the pocket knives and binocs when people inquire.
Which leads to a question, how much ammo do people have stocked up, are stocking up if the stores are constantly out?

Can you ever really have too much?

You need to internet search small gardens. If you have the time and gumption to engineer it, you can easily make a stacked planter system that you can get a high yield out of. Hanging tomato planter. Potted garden is a good idea too. If you're willing to sacrifice some space you can grow a bunch of stuff.

I'm in the city! If we ever move out to somewhere where we would have more land it'll get bigger. In actuality I could expand up the side of the house with more boxes, but we're not overly attached to where we live and I don't want to invest too much in more - especially if we can't move it.

Google "Square Foot Gardening" its a pretty sweet system for high-yields with minimal space.
