The National Park Service has released its latest draft of the Merced River Plan (MRP) - http://parkplanning.nps.gov/....cfm?projectID=18982, which affects many aspects of Yosemite Valley that are important to climbers, especially camping. While this particular plan does not include new rules regarding specific climbing activities (such as the use of fixed ropes, anchors, bivis and trail access) it will affect everything else climbers do in the Valley, including: camping, transportation/parking, access to amenities (stores, etc.), and possibly even the ability to enter the Valley during peak visitation. This plan will permanently change how Yosemite looks to both the casual and longtime visitor.

The draft MRP is a good plan that will improve the experience of climbers visiting the Valley, and Yosemite planners have solicited an unprecedented amount of public input and responded to suggested modifications. However, the Access Fund believes that the Park’s preferred alternative could be improved in a few key areas. After analyzing the draft MRP, surveying a range of climbers (and other stakeholders) that visit or live near the Valley, and meeting with Park officials, we propose the following specific improvements to the MRP:

• Increase camping opportunities
• Minimize new developments in the West Valley
• Remove/relocate infrastructure in the River Corridor
• Improve transportation
