It would seem that I have some news to catch up on.

Or you could just play Grand Theft Auto for 12 hours

Just get 4-5 stars and see where it goes.

Yes for a couple of trips, 2 good week long backpacking trips.
Gorgous alpine area. At the time there was a ranger station to bet your backcountry permits there, can't say if that is still the case, the seki website should have the 411.
Miles of narrow rough dirt roads to get there, but otherwise easily 2wd driveable.
*eyes glaze over*
y due ewe axe?

I am planning a 4 day trip Memorial Day weekend. I have awl the logistics set in motion and plans made... except for one thing:

Marmot deterrent.

I've read a few different methods to do this, and since it will be early season they'll be out in force. How'd you do it? I've seen everything from tarping the bottom of your vehicle to surrounding your vehicle in chicken wire, a combination of the two, and even adding coyote urine and mothballs. Leaving your hood open is another method too...

Just looking for opinions/what people did.

Nothing.
Absolutly nothing.
Both times I was there they gave us the marmut rundown, "check your hoses before you leave." But never had a problem. Of course this was in the 90-95 time frame. So, I am afraid I am of no help again.
So this raises a question, has anyone ever had their hoses attacked by Marmuts? Does anyone personally seen or know someone who has? I've only ever heard stories spread around. Like momma bear sending the cubs up the cables to get the food. or the raid can wrapped in bacon. Seams to be urban lengend????
However, I have heard dryer sheets keeps the rats/mice out of the engine compartment. Might try that.
But otherwise, does anyone have any first hand experience with the notorious marmut?
Good luck. Tongue

damn busy lately. this week sitting in on some art classes to see if I want to take the course next year. here in brasil they have bachelors, masters, phds, etc., but they also have something in between a bachelors and masters called a specialization. it's a cheap way to get a post-graduate degree / certification / diploma / whatever you want to call it. anyway, it was all theory last night. kind of boring if you ask me, but maybe it's something i need to do.

also did some advertising for both the website and the facebook fan page. got decent results from both, though facebook seems to have worked much better.

between the three (twitter) I'm over 2000 followers and adding about 10-15 per day. fingers are crossed that it turns into sales at some point. I haven't even really started leveraging the numbers, either, toward sales, so maybe once i start doing that things will pick up.

starting to put together a business plan now, too. fuck, a lot of work.

speaking of which: free intl shipping at one of my print sites: http://society6.com/GregMasonBurns (until sunday)

content...wooooo

so this raises a question, will AAA go to Mineral King to tow you to the nearest shop for hose repairs?

In my experience, if the art speaks for itself then no one cares about your degree. It will take a ton of sales to reach a point of positive returns. If, however, you need certain courses to advance your craft, then just take those.

I was at my mechanics yesterday, and turns out my dad had showed him some pics of my work. The mechanics son had just graduated from the North Bennett Street School, which is the school for learning furniture making in the US. When the mechanic dropped my name, his son said, "OMG, you work on Loran Smith's truck?"

I am 100% self taught, BTW.

Yeah, well you hit my thoughts spot on. I really don't feel that i need a degree to get my name out there, and I really want a mentor to help with some more technical aspects of processes, for example.

However, the program does have two benefits here that are particular to how things work in South America: 1) networking (opportunity to build lots of relationships, which is how business is done here) and; 2) with some sort of certificate I can teach and / or work in the field (maybe at a museum for example).

In North America, only skills matter. In Brasil at least, certifications matter more than skills. Peter Jennings didn't even graduate from high school, but he became the top anchor in the US as a result of his skills. That can't happen here. There are laws that govern pay scales according to level of education and types of degrees. Hiring people with degrees is the norm.

So I'm tossing the ideas around. Not sure that it's for me as a craft, but considering I'm struggling financially and don't, under any circumstances, want to return to the standard corporate world, I may need this in order to remain in the industry in another capacity to bring in cash while the portfolio builds up.
