Gee -- I don't know if us "great white frozen North" climbers have any experience with those attributes. Let us know what you come with, it might be educational.

---oo---oo---

In the guide-books I use, the stars mean "quality of climb". It describes the climb, not the climber.

On the other hand, steepness contributes to difficulty, so it's included in the grade.

I found your Facebook page. But where are those "symbols"? ?? ???

This is in regards to an upcoming sport climbing guide to Chattanooga Tennessee. You can skip the lower section by going straight to the Rockery Press Facebook page.

We need your advice!
In addition to a star system, Chatt Steel uses three uniquely Southern symbols to denote the highest quality that a route can receive. But, unlike a star, the symbol is intended to identify traits of climb that a star system doesn't address.

For example, there are many classics in Chatt Steel, but many of these climbs share in distinct Southern attributes like endurance, power, and steepness!!! that wouldn't otherwise be represented by a star system. Chatt Steel uses a symbol to represent these Southern Classics!

Now, we need your advice on which of the following two symbols you think should be used to do this:
Please cast your vote!

You can see the symbols in question on the Rockery Press Facebook page.

There are plenty of guidebooks that use this system already. Check out the new guidebooks in the New, Red, and the RockFax guidebooks for ideas.

Please go spend a week climbing in Indian Creek. In particular, do Belly Full of Bad Berries clean then come back and talk to us about these supposedly distinct to southern climbing attributes.

I have no imagination myself but casting around on the internet googleing and looking for southern symbols drags up a few you might consider:

and there was this one below which must have been Southern China but I can't read it.

Hope that's enough to get you started on your quest. I wouldn't use them myself as some might consider them offensive, ..but hey, it's a free world.

The Las Vegas area guidebook Islands in the Sky uses symbols to denote angle, pump factor, a flying heart (never done one) etc. as well as the star system and I have found it useful and entertaining. Additional symbols giving more route info are great IMO.

The use of inflammatory images does make your point, but it does not reflect today's South. I am a Caucasian male from Florida, but I still grew up fighting against ignorance. In particular, against the ignorants (those who are ignorant) dressed in bedsheets, because they knew that they were behaving badly.

Florida isn't really in the South, just FYI.

My 9th grade History teacher called Civil War the War of Northern Aggression. My 8th grade English teacher referred to a historical figure as a "damned yankee and a black Republican." I didn't understand the reference at the time.

As a White Sox fan I still despise the damned Yankees. :-)

Really? I thought Key West was the most Southern point in the US?....Oh yeah, I guess I did forget about Hawaii. Now there's the REAL Southerners.

Furthest point in the USA to the north, south, east and west. I only saw that since I Googled it!
