I made a rope cleaner by taking a PVC pipe and glueing a piece of astro turf inside. I used the PVC cement you would usually use to mate two pieces of pipe together. On the ends I used the purple primer and the same cement. It dried for about a week before I used it. I hung the rope over my aluminum ladder in my basement next to my dehumidifier. Once it was dry I went to flake it and tie it up to put it away. If felt like it had a waxy film on it and a few spots looked liked they had a dusting of white, really faint. I thought it was strange, for some reason I tasted it and it was bitter.
I then threw it it a pillow case and tried putting it in my washer with a small amount of tide. When it came out it was better but still has a little bit of a waxy feel to it and the bitter taste is still there just not as strong.
Is the rope still fine? Has anyone had this happen before. It's a Sterling rope and this is the first time I've washed it.

I'm pretty sure that Sterling incorporates a rope bittering agent to encourage people to clip at their waist and not above their head where they will need to use their teeth.
To save money they only do this on the 25' closest to the ends, so you should cut off 30' if the taste bothers you.

Just coat the whole rope in Ketchup and that should solve the bad-taste issue.

I've never heard of anyone using tide to wash rope, only woolite, kinda expensive, not sure what the manufacture recommended though.

Obviously you saturated it with micro fumes from the PVC cement plus the reaction it caused with the micro coating on the astro turf. This has caused micro-fractures of the crystalline tertiary structure of the nylon fibers. It sounds pretty unsafe. Send it to me since I have access to a hydro-grammatic phase differentiator and can test it for you.

First, this is brilliant. You should consider applying for a patent.
Second, are you sure you didn't leave some of your own deposits when you last cleaned your, ahem, "rope"?

I tried this. It didn't get the waxy coat off, but it was tastier.
