I'm gunna die!!!

But seriously, I've heard it's 30% weaker when wet. it has been laying flaked out for 24 hours and feels dry. Is my rope permanently weaker or is it just fine? It's my cragging rope and I'm still upset that I bought a rope without a dry treatment.

30% weaker when wet is about right. If it's dry, it's not wet anymore.

All irrelevant. I have taken 30' whips on soaked ropes. Guess what? They still hold. When is the last time you heard of a wet rope failing because it was wet?

Quote of the day!

UpToTheOzone -- let the rope dry some more, and re-flake it periodically, maybe morning/evening sort of thing. It may feel dry to you, and it is probably mostly dry after 24 hours, but even a little bit of moisture can result in mildew/mold if you roll it up and store in your bag for some time.

In terms of climbing, it is fine. The above advice applies more if you are planning to store the rope for a few weeks and not climb on it.

If you're not sure, replace it.

Water plasticizes nylon, making it weaker. When the water is gone (it's dry again), it returns to its original elongation, modulus, and tensile properties.

Nylon always contains some amount of water. What you don't want is saturation.

Why do beginners think that climbing gear is so fragile?

Does posting this make you feel good about yourself? Just because I don't have over 2000 posts on an internet forum does not make me a beginner. I do think; however, that inquiring about my rope is pretty important.

Thinking you need a dry treatment for cragging however, does Wink
