Marking the middle of my rope

So the middle marker on my rope has faded so much that it cannot be seen. How should I remark it? I've heard there are special pens to mark the rope, but that seems silly. I've seen people put dental floss around the middle so they can feel it as they are belaying. I've personally put tape around the middle as a temporary solution during long raps.

What is the best solution? I've heard complaints about tape for it going through the belay device, but I really don't see this as an issue

Not to mention any solvents in the adhesive.

If you *need* to see your middle mark, buy a rope marker, or learn to find it the old fashioned way. The moment your rope sees its first chop, the mark in the middle will be eff'd anyway.

Did the Internet just fall through a time warp?

Timewarped my reply from April 2009.

That light string you can get from opening dog food sacks, or large sacks of bird seed is good.

I attach it with a dbl-fisherman followed by overhands until I have about 2 inches tied on the middle of the rope. It makes a nice mark that is visible and easy to feel. I replace it when it gets dirty or starts to fray from use.

I definitely now favor the cat food sack strings because they are red and look less like a core shot than white string.

It never occurred to you to do a forum search? Not being flippant - this is one of the really valid instances where a search would have quickly revealed many discussions - there's no need to yet again thrash it out. There are only few topics/questions that have generated more discussion than this one. Searching for "middle rope mark" produces 750 hits - other variants pick up other threads.

I think those brands can change their formula for making permanent markers and some overtly cautious types might suspect it could weaken the rope or cause microfractures in anything it comes into contact with.
