There is a new guy (non-climber, who never climbed but is willing to try) in my life and his birthday is coming up. Would it be considered rude to bring him to buy some climbing shoes as a birthday gift?
Since its in a slight selfish pursuit where I want some company at the crag. Any other ideas/techniques to convince a partner to join more then once? (successful or not, it would be fun to hear)

Bad idea. Buy him a birthday gift that he will actually enjoy NOW, and rent the climbing shoes for him to try climbing.
If he sticks with climbing, you can always buy him climbing gear for future birthdays, Christmases, etc. etc.

good point, but how do you usually solve the no-renting options for climbing outside?

You could take him climbing indoors for the first try.
You could ask around if any of your friends have old climbing shoes in the size that would fit the guy
You could find a guide/climbing school outfit, or ask at your gym, many places WILL rent you shoes that you can take out for the day. It might cost extra, or you might have to leave your credit card behind.
You could take him climbing during some kind of climber event/festival, because there is usually a free shoe demo at those events, you can take the shoes out to try for a day, and as a bonus he can try multiple different models and find what fits him.
He could climb in just sneakers. Many people do, for their first try on an easy toprope.
Just a few ideas...

Don't get the shoes. It'll probably be a waste of money and will put too much pressure on him.
Odds are he won't do much climbing anyway. I've taken most of my friends and family climbing at some point and I haven't roped in with any of them in a long time. All of my partners are people who were climbing before I met them. You might get lucky but you should let him set the pace at which he does, or does not, get in to climbing.

Thank you guys, there will be no shoes. ;)
And Lena thanks for the shoe tips! I guess I'll have to do some research for crags that have super easy routs so sneakers will be sufficient.
