Has anyone ever tried wearing a thin glove for leading and then putting a big mitt over that glove for belaying. This could be nice since it would keep you from having to take your gloves off and the over mitt could help dry the leading glove. Just an idea.

I stole this idea, way back in 1967, from some old mountaineers who had been doing it for years. It is part of the layering system, of using multiple layers of clothing to adjust how warem you are.
When I first startyed using it, it was a silk inner glove, a woollen mitt and a waterproof outer mitt. Now I use a thinsulate inner, a woollen mitt and a waterproof outer mitt. My how things change over the years, with new developements and ideas.

Eric

for me it's leather gloves for climbing & some outer mittens if I am cold (easy terrain or belaying...)

Yep same here it works well.
Just remember to keep you big mitt inside of your coat when you get to a belay you have warm mitts to put on. Stuffed at the back works to keep the bulge out of the way while climbing.

My gloves were designed that way. I usually climb in -2 to -10 degrees and find the climbing gloves get wet so Nicer to Put dry ones on for belay and Keep thin damp ones warm down my front.
