Closed or eye 2 eye for friction rope?

If you have a closed loop, whether it's a single eye or held together by a fisherman's knot, you can only tie a prusik knot as far as I'm aware. If you have an eye 2 eye, you can tie additional knots like the Distel, Blake's, Schwabisch hitches and probably others I'm not aware of.

Is there a need to have anything other than a simple prusik loop if the intent is a fall restraint? Thanks.

A single loop can also be used as a Klemheist knot plus at least one additional type of rope grab whose name escapes me at the moment. I wanna say it's a Hedden knot. Those other knots you mention will probably be unknown to 99% of climbers.

If you still want to rig your fall arrest set-up in climber-familiar terms, I suggest you stick to proven climber techniques. The best of them for your intended application, as has been mentioned, is a length of dynamic rope and a Grigri.

Thanks gunklemike, of those types I like the Ropeman 1 the best as a backup.

Eye to eye open ended loop works with many hitches and grabbing knots. Some that you've mentioned can be used with the ETE by putting a biner through the two eyes after the hitch is made.

Prusik
Klemheist
Distel
