Hey people! My wife and I are planning a five month trip to the states, Starting in Colorado heading to Utah, Nevada, Cali, up into Canada (Squamish) then back down through Montana and back to Boulder. Just after some suggestions for which Guide books to get to try and cover all bases.

Ahhh... the app. Remember that time the batteries died in your paper guidebook? Remember the time you dropped your guidebook in the river and it stopped working? Or the time you ruined a $200 guidebook by accidentally backing over it?

Remember all your friends handing around your app and having fun looking at all the notes and doodles and crazy things you all wrote in them, decades later?

Me either.

Apps are great.... I'm working on loading the Smoke Hole guidebook into one right now.

But nothing beats the function, durability, and value of a well-worn, well-loved guidebook.

Agreed! The app looks like its gonna get a heap of use, but obviously thats dictated by my battery life! Plus I would still be getting a guide for ticks and notes purpose! So the question remains.....

Colorado? Eleven Mile and Boulder Canyon, Turkey Tail, and Table Mtn (skip the Garden crowds.... it ain't all that).

Cali: J-Tree, for sure... Yosemite, of course and the Needles are pretty sweet.

If it is colder by the time you get to the States, definitely hit AZ and find Mt. Lemmon and Devils Canyon... well worth the detour.

Use MountainProject to narrow down the list of areas that you want to go to. And then buy the guidebooks based on that. There is so much in the states that you have listed! a month is a long time, until you break it down into weeks, and add in travel time and rest days. All of a sudden, you are looking at 4 areas for a week, or 8 areas for 3 days each. And that doesn't sound like a lot, anymore.

The app is good to have, because for some areas the guidebooks are out of date, and there are tons of new routes. GPS info comes in handy, too, usually not available in printed guidebooks. And extra photos/topos/user comments are nice.

But yes, I too love the printed guidebooks, and buy them

Yeah, I think the app + good old guide book(s) is gonna be key! Will check out the places mentioned. multi pitch trad is our main objective. we live in New Zealand and there isn't so much 'on your door step' climbing, so getting into the the US is gonna be bliss! thanks for the help people. keep the surggestions coming!

Be sure to hit up Devils Tower in Wyoming and the Black Hills (Sylvan Lake and Cathedral Spires) in South Dakota on your way back to Boulder from Montana.

These two guys spent a lot of time in the Needles trying there best to get this book right. It covers any route that I'd recommend to you.

As far as Devils Tower goes, there are so many that are good you can look them up online, but my favorite is one Dingus Mcgee put out.

Here it is, I didn't know they were still selling this one any more.

Great advice that any other visitors should heed, but in this case recall that the OP wrote: "...are planning a five month trip to the states...."

I think maybe we were all so envious that we just blocked that detail from our climbing minds!
