Sorry about the downtime and site slowness over the past few days folks.
I'm very aware of it, and have spent many, many hours trying to figure out what's happening under the covers. It appears to be a combination of a number of different things--when they all go off at once, it causes a major load that brings down the site. Unfortunately, they don't all happen simultaneously that often, so it's difficult to debug and see if my tweaks are improving things or not.
I think I've got it mostly fixed... time will tell.
