yes, its safe......techwash/ropewash would be better. wash by hand or a front loading machine. beware laundry mat machines, who knows what crazy shit was in there before your gear.....rinse the HELL out of your gear , then, air-dry on a flat surface, not hanging (that could take a couple of days for a 60m rope)

When I do wash my ropes, I just do it in some warm water. Two things turned me onto using just water.

The first was accidentally dropping a large portion of my rope in the water while ice climbing in Ouray and being surprised at how clean it was when it came out.

The second was learning that, for the most part, professional carpet cleaners use only water as well. The reason being it is really difficult to get the detergent out once you use it on your carpet. That left over detergent "washes" your shoes/socks/feet every time you walk on it and so your carpet attracts more dirt and stains in high traffic areas.
