Hi everyone,
My rock club at school (in MA) goes on an off-campus trip every other year. So next March (of 2004) our school is going on a trip. I'm doing a bit of work for my club leader and trying to find and suggest the best place to go next year for an approximately 10 people at most group. We don't do big wall, but mainly sport and toprope (and if we REALLY had to maybe trad). The lead climbers probably would only sport up to 5.10 or so. So what I'm asking is if you think J-Tree is the best place to go that time of year (weatherwise) and a good place for our group to work at (in terms of the criteria I have described). If so, what section would be best. If not, what other places would you suggest. We've already been to Red Rocks and are really looking for something different next. It would be great to hear from you.
Thanks,

Matt

In March, the weather in Joshua Tree can be cold and/or wet, or it can be really nice. But I'd say chances are that the weather will be good enough for climbing.

I think the Sheep Pass camground is a group site. Also, if the weather is cold, there are group sites in Indian Cove, which is lower and warmer than the "main" park. There is climbing at both sites. You need to call the park to reserve a group site, I think.

You can probably toprope about 80% of all the climbs at Joshua Tree. However, there is not a lot of sport climbing there. There are quite a few face climbs but you may feel they are a bit runout if you are used to well protected sport climbs. Also, a lot of these climbs do not have a bolt anchor. Bring gear and long slings.

Have a good time. Be safe.

A great place to warm-up on for your group, with great top rope set up capabilities is the Atlantis Wall (Lost Horse). Great mellow trad climbing with top rope possibilities for the harder climbs. Be aware that "Pocket Pussy" is rated a 11a in the book, but really its a 6 or 7. But still great. Another good spot is the Hall of Horrors. Great for all climbers. Enjoy!!

Ok, thanks guys this is good info, but i could still use a bit more. What other weather experiences do you have w/ J-Tree, especially in March and springtime? And don't say something ambiguous like, "It can be good or bad." In other words: What has been your consistent weather experience at J-Tree (in springtime)? I could use a bit more suggestions on where to go also.
Thanks,

Matt
