cannon makes nice digitals, the elf is pretty sweet, so are the other ones... really depends on what you are looking for, and in what price range.. but I think cannon makes nice onces in the 300-1000 range.

Take a look at the Minolta Dimage series of cameras. The "5", "7", "7i" and "7hi" are all proffesional quality camreas. The optics are what stand out to me on these camreas. Although size and price may be more than you are looking for. Personally I'm looking on E-bay for a 7i I can afford.

If you are looking for a good camera and money is not an issue you should go with canon. Go with the Canon EOS 1D .

check out dpreview.com. cnet.com has good computer reviews and they review digital cameras as if they were computers. DPreview does more photographic tests. Also... I bet if you gave a price range you'd get better advice.

I climb with the Canon ELF digital. It's heavy duty and small. A couple of things I think are neat on other units though...

-Some have batteries shaped the same as AA batteries. That way, when your special rechargeable battery dies (which it almost always does on a long weekend of shooting/viewing) you can just put regular AA batteries in until you can get a charge on the regular battery

- The Sony, and some others, lets you take a picture, zoom in on that picture, and take it again, thereby creating kind of a dynamic zoom/crop feature

- Some cameras have unlimited movie time. I take short movies of climbs & bouldering quite often. They're fun to view later. My Canon has a limited film time, others are limited only by memory space

- Watch out for optical vs. digital zoom. More optical zoom is better because the zoomed image remains sharper. Once you go to digital zoom, the edges become fuzzy

Whatever camera you buy, plan on buying at least a 64mb memory upgrade. 128mb is really nice.

Have fun

For a great entry level camera with a lot of advanced features check out the Canon Powershot A40. A bit larger than the Elph but a little more robust in both structure and capabilities. The optics and CCD quality are better than the average in its range, check just about any reasonable review site. Here are a few things that a climber should keep in mind when looking for a digital camera:

1. Batteries - Avoid models that require a propriatary battery. They are expenseive to replace or buy extras, plus you can't buy emergency ones at the corner store. Plan on getting a couple sets of NiMh (1700mA+) rechargables and a charger. They last 3 times longer than regular bats. Word to wise, these things eat batteries like nothing else.

Media - Find cheap media that is popular. I use CompactFlash. For me it also works in my mp3 player and USB cardholder, three. Depending on the camera it can also use CF MicroDrives that are up t 1Gb now. Be sure to get at least 128Mb to avoid extra gear and stopping to delete images or change cards.

Don't buy into digital zoom.

Features on the A40 that are cool:
2Mpixel - Good but not insane sized photos
Photo stitch - sowtware included to help make decent panoramics.
View finder - so you don't have to rely on the screen. Helps to save on batteries.
Auto mode - Makes a great point and shoot camera.
Manual - Gives you the basic freedoms of a SLR.
Movie mode - Simple movies with sound. Limited to 15 seconds on high quality.
Tough body - Not as fragile as other modles
Flash w/Red Eye reduction - Nuff said
TV out - Set up a slide show on any TV with A/V imputs.
Cost - About $250 for one of the highest quialty cameras in the 2Mp range.

All just food for thought. Hope it helps somebody.

I have the Canon Elph S110. I love the durability of it. I've dropped it a couple of times while intoxicated and suprisingly it still works. GREAT CAMERA!!

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Canon Powershot S45 (it's a 4 megapixel camera). I have not had any problems with the camera and it produces some great pictures. I just took it to the top of Mt. Cotopaxi in Ecuador and did not have any trouble with it.

Hey Austin,

Well, you've seen the camera I use, the Sony Cyber-shot 3.2 megapixels.

There are better cameras out there but you should ask your step-dad before you purchase one, to make sure it is comapatible with the Mac you have at home.

Love you son, Dad

Megapixel Rule:

Website: 1-1.5
Newspaper: 2.5-3
Magazine: 3-4
Posters: 5+

The most you need if you are not a professional is 4. Anything above that is ridiculous. I do publications and posters, so I use a slightly better camera.

The more megapixels the bigger the photo. So If you plan on doing poster go with about 5+.

Hope this helps

Cody Keith

Well that camera's kicks on mine for sure, probably the power of the pink.

Anyways, I've got a Nikon Coolpix 4500, it's fantastic. 4Mp, 4x optical zoom and 4x digital (digital gets more and more blocky the deeper you go though, as mentioned earlier). Can take pictures as big as 2048x1600 I believe, but when scaled down after moving to your computer, the crispness is really nice. Very good colors as well, better than some others I found when checking for reviews (I exclusively used dpreview.com, the most info can be had there).

If you're interested in seeing some shots from it, I've been putting most of my shots up on the web, but keep in mind they're all shrunk down to 800x600 or 1024x768, and highly compressed for a smaller image. Quality on the masters is much greater in all cases.

http://members.silk.net/michaelr/Pics

Not many climbing shots there (ok, like none) but I got it in October, so that can be forgiven, yes?

PM me if you'd like more info.

Oh, and if money wasn't an issue, get a Nikon D100. Bloody amazing camera...somewhere in the 6.5Mp area I think, 3 grand canadian, but GOD the pictures that thing can take. :-)

Or you can just sign it out from school for free . I haven't bothered though... too much else to do.

i have had two cannon digital cameras and neither lasted a full year before their demise. i now have a nikon 885 which has recently been replaced by their 4mp camera. it is 10 months old and i have shot over 4,000 images with it. i bought it thru best buy who will sell you a 3 year no questions warranty for 19.95. it shoots good images and has the same control features as nikons f-series film cameras.
michael

p.s. i agree that the d100 is an excellent buy if you are looking for a high end camera. it has almost the same specs as a d1 but at half the price or less.
