Hey,

I need some quick advice - I can pick up a new BD double Sky Lodge ledge for 584.00 with the fly - brand new - pro shop is sticking it on ebay in the next day or two, but will sell it to me for 550 + tax.

Is this a good ledge?

Chad

I have a BD double ledge and I think it needs some improvements. If I were to do it again, I'd go for an A5 style ledge, rather than the fold out.

That is a really good price for a ledge and fly. That ledge is a great ledge for 550 although I think the A5 ledge is better. The main thing is that the A5 has doors on the fly, that is a really plush feature. The BD ledge sets up really easy and the fly is bomber, but a pain in the ass to get it on right. The BD ledge is slightly smaller than the A5 double and quite a bit smaller than the A5 cliff cabana. The doors on the fly are just the shiznit. For 550 though ? That is a REALLY sweet price for a pretty sweet ledge and fly. The BD ledge is a bit lighter than the A5. My money would go to a Cliff Cabana. Of course that would be alot more money.

Dude, I just picked up the same ledge from the same guys in Provo. I won my auction for about $530. It arrived last weekend and I've only set it up on the patio once, but from first impressions I'm a little disappointed. I certainly wouldn't want to pay full retail for this ledge & fly ($785). The double seems awfully narrow and the bed material is 1000 denier cordura, but it seems thin and not very well protected. I'll probably end up spraying a few layers of tool dip on it for abrasion resistance. The set up is quick and easy for the ledge, but the fly is another matter. I still haven't figured out how to stuff the fly so the attachment point (going from the fly to the ledge) sticks out through the bottom of the stuff sack. The bed noticeably sags since there's no support underneath and no tensioning straps. The adjustment straps for the ledge leading up to the powerpoint don't have daisey chains sewn in, so they are worthless for lashing stuff around the ledge. I'll probably end up stitching these on myself or have it done by a shoe repair shop.

I guess what I'm saying is, yeah, its worth the bargain price but if this is the industry standard there's a lot of room for improvement. After reading KrustyKlimber's instructions on how he built his ledge, I'm pretty confident I could make a better one than BD. But I'm not willing to invest the time at this point.

Should you buy it for that price? Probably. I'd sell you mine for that price and save a few more bucks to get the Metolius or a Cliff Cabana.

You should try to get this one, A5 with Exp. rain fly:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2703795853&category=30107

Auction closes in a day or so, and it's at $415 now. Clearly, it will go up, but you never know. I'd bid on it, but I have no money!

That is a double, but it is both shorter and more narrow than the BD double (84"x42"). The A5 Cliff Cabana looks like the biggest ledge on the market.

BTW -- anyone know A5's stinking URL? The old A5adventures.com doesn't work and I can't find a valid link to their site anywhere.

I wouldn't bother with the BD ledges. They are heavy to boot. I have the A5 double and love it!

Mojo didn't even bid! And, Dawg, you need sniping software! Looks like you got hosed during the last 10 seconds of the auction. That bastard.

Amatures...nothing but eBay amatuers.

You must have a different master plan for acquiring a ledge. Remind me to tell you sometime how I over paid for mine. Talk about an amateur...

Hey Chad, what did you decide about the BD ledge?

Yeah I almost went for it with 60 seconds left, but I still dont know what I really want. From what I hear the A5 rocks. I still have time so I will keep looking. That was a smoking deal tho if it was mint. I like the idea of a door to get into it. And they say the A5 is BEEFY.

I have the metolius 2 man ledge.Great ledge but metolius is totaly dropping the ball with the production of the flys for their ledges. I've had my ledge for over a year and still no fly. They keep telling me some point down the road they will be shippinf flys.. The last I heard was in Oct or so when they said for sure January. Well Jan. has come and gone and still no fly. Other than that little bit of BS no problems and a great ledge.

I have seen those metolious ledges and they are really bomber. Once again, the fly does not have doors. The BD fly is also really bomber, but, you guessed it no doors.
The wonderful bene's of doors: they make it easy to get in and out of the ledge and to reach out to the pigs.
I really like to sit in the ledge with the fly doors open and chill with the view, them be able to zip that sucker up and sleep. Also in cold weather one can belay with the rope running right out the top of the nearly zipped up door, thus staying warm and cozy inside for that four hour belay.
Any way, now that I have sprayed on and on about the greatness of the A5 ledges, I do have a BD double ledge and fly for sale so check out my post on the classifieds section of this site for a screaming deal.

I have a BD Double with fly and I love it. It does sag in the middle a bit, more than the A5 ledge. The reason I love this ledge so much is the ease of setup. It is SUPER easy to set up. The other ledges out there, both the A5 and the Metolious were a pain in the A#@ to set up. They're not bad on the store floor, but try it hanging in your harness with the ledge hanging as well. It was just too hard to get the last corner piece into the hole for the A5. Also, I've been in one storm in the BD ledge, and I have to say that the fly was BOMBER. Not a drop of rain came inside the ledge until my partner insisted on going down below to get the "Rec bag" out of the haul bag. No doors, but bomber as hell because of that fact. Also, somebody earlier mentioned no daisies. Well, the end of every tensioning strap is a loop. I don't know how much friggin gear you're looking to hang up in your ledge, but I find these 6 loops to be enough for walkman, shoes, headlamps, and the big bottle of margarita that was slung- we didn't even have to unclip it to pass it, and could just let it swing without spilling or putting a lid on. I'd say that the BD ledge is bomber, unless you are super uncomfortable with it sagging a bit. Oh yeah, one more thing, I don't find the fly that hard to put on, but stuffing it is a pain- BD could have made the stuff sack a smidge bigger.
