For those of you who don't know, this just occured.

Space shuttle Columbia broke apart in flames over Texas on Saturday, killing all seven astronauts just 16 minutes before they were to glide to their landing strip in Florida.

Full Story

This is terrible and my deepest sympathies go out to all of the families involved. A terrible tragedy.

It's truly a sad story.

My heart and prayers go out to the families and those affected.

There's debris from the shuttle in my area, as I'm about 1/2hr. from the Kennedy Space Center.

Today will go down in history as a day of sadness, tradedy, and mourning for our nation.

I've been following the events since this morning, a true tragedy, but one has to ask, why use a shuttle that is 22 years old? It's only 3 years from being an antique, especially on an experimental mission. Hindsight and all...
My prayers are with their families.

A great tragedy. I have profound sympathy for the families of these brave astronauts.

Now is the time to abandon the Model-T shuttles and move into the 21st century with the development of a modern hypersonic air(space)craft capable of taking off and landing under its own power.

This is all truly sad!
Maybe now is the time to stop wasting billions of dollars and many lives in space and start spending it on earth where it is needed. Spend that money on the environment and on all the people that can not afford to heat their homes or go to a doctor or get their prescriptions filled.

Watching the shuttle go down was definitely a surreal experience. An absolute tragedy.

The Chief Flight Director said something not entirely related to the disaster but was interesting: "Why does something like this have to occur for the people of America to come together?"

Several NASA engineers have stated the age of the ship will have nothing to do with it. The shuttle is reworked so thoroughly after every mission it's practically new anyway. Also, the shuttles are designed to be able to fly 100 missions and this was only like it's 23rd.

I listened to it unfold as I drove to the crag this morning. I caught the first "Columbia has been out of contact now for about a minutes and a half..." which turned into a 1/2 hour, which turned into the reality that it was lost.

Very tragic. When I arrived at my destination, I certainly didn't feel like climbing. My thoughts and prayers have been with their families all day, and imagine will continue to be.

Besides the shuttle loss today, there was an avalanche near Revelstoke, BC today that took 7 lives. This is just a couple of weeks after another avalanche near the same area killed 7 people. Needless to say, the TV news has been pretty depressing today.
May God take their souls...

yes they said it doesn't matter, but it sure didn't help did it? Now innocent people, one was considered a hero, are all dead. Would you trust a reworked 22 year old peice of pro?it was the 28th mission btw, and that's all well and good, if they used it from the moment it was new straight through, which im sure it could hit 100+ missions. Either way, The result is the same, and a tragedy nonetheless. Their families are in my thoughts and prayers

This is a horrible, horrible tragedy. My sympathy goes out to all the families involved.

But what is even more of a tragedy is the terrible state of affairs that our space program is in. We put people on the moon 30 years ago. What have we done since? Lost a probe in space because one guy was using the metric system and someone else wasn't. Come on now, that's pretty basic, isn't it?

A tile fell off the shuttle when it launched 16 days ago. It couldn't be repaired (because the shuttle was already in space) so NASA said, "Well, let's just hope that it does not affect anything."

I'm quite sure several people suggested that we should send something else up to do repairs, but that costs, like, millions of dollars. So they just hoped for the best. And put the rescue teams on alert when the landing neared. They (NASA) expected something to go wrong on the landing.

That is SAD, SAD, SAD!!!

jgill hit it right on when he said "Let's move into the 21st century." No doubt! The technology we have now, we should be landing people on other planets regularly. Oh, let's not put any more money into the space program, let's go make war instead. What a freaking joke!

And the comment about "stop wasting billions of dollars on the space program and spend the money on our environment here, and the people here"... Well, that's a great idea, but not realistic at all. Human nature is to destroy. We've been doing it for many, many, many years. It will not make ANY difference how many people protest it, we'll keep doing it. On a grander and grander scale year after year after year.

The sad truth (the reality) is that what we need to do (the ONLY hope for future generations) is funnel more money into the space program, and work on colonizing space or another planet.

It is the ONLY realistic and non-selfish option. You can idealize it all you want, but we will destroy this planet. It's inevitable.

And we should be eating pills instead of meals and using flying cars.... oh wait... we live in the real world.

There are various "problems" that keep regularly landing people on other planets from being a reality... most of them are no where near being solved. Where do you get your expectations from??? the scifi channel?

P.S. why is the topic in the general forum anyways??
