Who here uses gloves to climb? I personally don't like the thought of using gloves...but that's my opinion...it seems like a rare occasion, but I saw someone at the gym today with metolius(i think) gloves made for climbing...what are your thoughts?? ~*Kira*~

They're crap for climbing hard. Good for protecting your hands while aiding, crap for climbing hard. If sized tight enough to be snug, they will cut off your circulation. Otherwise, they'll be a little loose. Good for cramming into cracks when you're on a mixed aid/free route, since you'll already have them on, but otherwise, a waste of money and a performance inhibitor. JMHO. You don't have to believe me, you can try climbing with them on. I have. I figured "hey, if tape gloves are good, my rap gloves should be better". They weren't. I took them off midway up a 5.9+ crack; the things are great for protecting your palms on rappels, and your knuckles when aiding, but they are not helpful for free climbing.

Gloves do you no good unless you're aiding or if you're rappelling a long way or ascending ropes. Otherwise just leave them alone. I too have seen people in the gym wearing them while bouldering... I just close my eyes and hope they go away. But if you're never told otherwise, I guess you wouldn't know any better.

I've used liner gloves to climb at Devil's Lake, Wisconsin in February and also to finish off a climb recently when it was raining at Joshua Tree. I couldn't hold small crimps, but hand jams and chunky holds were ok. Not recommended unless you're cold.

I have heard of folks taping on leather gloves to widen their hands for offwidths, I use hand-jammies for wide cracks and that's it on gloves' usefulness for actual climbing. Stick with tape for most cracks.
