When I am an old Woman...

I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves,
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
and make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and a pickle for a week.
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We will have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old and start to wear purple.

**This was shared with me by a client as we shared our elder/goddess/mother/grandmother stories**

Brings to mind, the independence I have learned from my grandmother/my goddess. She watches over me, and keeps me in check. I see her traits here, and then see me, in a few.

just wanted to share.

what effects have your "mother" grandmother's? Historically given to you as women...that maybe you hold as pride and proud?

I can bake up a storm!
Meat and potatoes
make a bed
write thank you notes*
be feminine*
sew
garden

The strength as I have now, I feel I owe to her.
again, I ask...
what effects have your "mother", grandmother's, sister or Aunt or female historically given to you as a woman?

*flash memory:
My grandma...no matter how old(94)? No matter how frail? On walks with a walker/or arm holding...
Fiesty lil 4'11 thing* :

*Trying to stomp on ants as we walked and looked at gardens/houses for her and my enjoyment.

*Me making margaritas, and realizing her small size, makes a funny drunk ol lady*

Goddess bless*

Right on, sista...

This was the inspriational poem we used when we planned my grandmother's 90th birthday celebration - about 100+ of us on a chartered boat out on Lake Michigan. I can't tell you how strange and fun it was to see 4 generations of both males and females dressed in purple, drinking vodka for hours on a Saturday afternoon and soaking up the sun....

For what its worth, ol' Grnadma Wright is now 94!!!

....I shall be climbing hard aid when I'm 90.

(so that's the line I'd add. )

My mom taught me to stand up fiercely and loyally for the people I care about.

Unfortunately, outside of that, my family's enough of a mess that I've learned a lot more "don'ts" than "dos." And I've learned that no matter how messed-up a person is, they're just trying the best they can. Which is important. Nobody sets out to make a bad decision on any day.

T. i saw that poem a long time ago and i loved it then still one of my favorites.

i had to think for a little while about this though as i consider my family very crazy especially my mom and my grandmother. but i have to give my mother alot of credit many times she was both my mother and my father to me, one of the most important things that i got from her was to accept everyone for who they are no matter what color, religion, race, sexuality everyone is equal.

my poor aunt who seems to get stuck in the middle of these crazy people all the time constantly reminds me we are family and to not let my mother's judgements affect my own.

Yeah!
To say that I have learned a lot from my mom and grandmas is an understatement.
They have taught me strength, convidence, and compassion. My mom taught me that no body is ever better than me, so go ahead and show those boys that your every bit as good as they are! She taught me how to climb!:D She showed me that you should not walk around obstacles, but leap over them. My mom taught me that there is more to life than a clean house, my grandma showed me how to clean. My grandma has taught me that you can do whatever you want no matter your age.

Personally, when I am old I am going drive everyone crazy and then maybe I will settle down.

I wish I couls say I've had a strong female influence in my life, but unfortunately I haven't. My family is very distant, I only get to see my grandparents and other extended family about 2 or maybe 3 times a year, so I never have been close to any of my relatives, not even my mother or sister. And all the mentors that I've had throughout my life have been men. My best friends have been guys.

But it seems that lately, I've been gaining more and more girl friends(which is good, because now I finally have people to talk about boys with ) I got to be good friends with one of my female teachers after a feild study I went on that she led. And I've been talking more with my mother.

I never realized how much I was missing out on until I got to know other girls more. I only wish I had been able to sooner.

My older sister gave the poem book with that as it's title poem to my mom for xmas. She also gave her a red hat (although as funny as the hat looks, it kinda suits her...).

I am going to speed down my street, blasting Christmas music in July and fill my neighbors yard with pink flamingos while they are sleeping....

Love the poem.

My grandmother and my mother have taught me that joy comes from service to others -- especially your family.

My mother taught me that I can do anything I put my mind to... but I need to choose what's most important.

My grandmother taught me nasty little limericks.

****When I'm "older"***

I want to wear my purple hat as I:
........run a marathon
........go to a local college and take all the fun classes I missed first time around with students 60 years younger!
........get my old lady friends to race me around the grocery store in those little motorized carts

the women in my family have taught me that women are strong and can do whatever we put out minds to, and that we are independent and deserve to be treated fairly.

when i am old i hope to have long hair down to my waist; be eccentric as hell; be as wise as can be; and do whatever i want and like it!

I'm going to drive as fast as I want, because I think that cops are going to be too surprised to give me a ticket.

I'm going to cackle.

I'm going to share lusty looks with my husband or if I have no husband, with whomever I want.

My grandmothers taught me the importance of eating food that isn't good for you sometimes, how to find the best seashells, and showed me how to lindy (though I still can't lindy).

Its a dance. Kinda like swing I think. Its similar anyways, from what I remember. Very active and gymnastic and spinny and stuff. Does that help?

Its's a four count swing dance from the forties (as opposed to East Coast Swing, which is a three count dance to a four/four tune) and is way fun!
