I will also insist on the pocket knife A friend of mine got caught under am ice cold waterfall while rappelling during a thunderstorm in the Alps. His prussik got stuck because it was wet. Without his knife, he might have gotten in even more serious trouble. Gear can get stuck in any situation; being able to cut sling or rope is very important. yt

I'm going to second the cell phone. I would consider it as important as a helmet.

1) Knife 2) 48" 6mm perlon for prusik 3) Ropeman ascender/locker 4) Small metal whistle the diameter of a pencil, about 2" long. Practice self-rescue, there's a lot of little things you might not think about until you do it the first time. Better that they be during a "dry" run.

Some form of led light. If you always carry a led headlamp, fine. Otherwise, carry a micro led, key-chain light. I carry a led key-chain light (enough light to make a natural anchor), a whistle (you can't scream very long, before losing your voice), a small, serrated knife, and a small child's watch (when racing the sun or clouds, keep track of the time). I put all this on a small string that I wear around my neck. Everything is handy, and I put this on before the helmet goes on. A knife in a pocket (or even worse in a pack), could be difficult to get to when you really need it. I can quickly check the time without fumbling around. Make sure you keep the string tucked inside a shirt and use a light enough string that it will break instead of choke you if it manages to catch on something. A phone could be extremely useful, if you get reception. Be careful of assuming it will work. I do something similar to Sspssp. My knife is small and half serrated. The serrations make it much easier to cut rope and webbing. You can get a mini keychain led that clicks on and stays. The one I'm using now has to be pressed to stay on so I have to hold it in my teeth. And I've found a small tube shaped whistle that is light and has little bulk. This stuff is light enough that I forget it is around my neck.

1 ropeman 1 tibloc 1 prussic 1 whistle 1 super-small compas 1 small pocket knife 1 keychain LED in case I drop headlamp ALWAYS an extra cordalette (foot loops, mechanical advantage haul system, bailing, tying on splints, releasable knots, whatever) All of this fits in the "false bottom" pocket of my new Petzl chalk bag, except for the cordolette, which I keep hung on a locker, my chalk bag is on a locker, too. two way radio on potential epics especially...to be able to break into someone elses conversation if necessary.

A Space Blanket bag is pretty small for stuffing into a pack. It's waterproof and also body heat IR reflective. And you can use it as a big mirror to signal for help (if and when the sun comes out). I just found a giant, super thick one for the walls, that fits two people (I have to cut it down, otherwise it's long enough to fit four). It looks like some sort of industrial monster. I have no idea. I got if for $3.00.

Over the years the rescue equipment I carry has diminished to the point that all I carry anymore is what is between my ears and a knife. speed is safety, junk slows you down.
