I just learned the hard way today that it's best not to look at a piece while you are bounce testing it.

It was a #7 stopper. Just a small bump just above my eyebrow that didn't stop me from finishing the pitch (like an hour later). Heh, we're not even BWTs yet... we're more like SWTs (small wall theorists).

I knew the placement wasn't great, but I've been experimenting to place pieces as high as I could rather than as bomber as I could.

One of my partners learned that lesson the hard way by bounce testing a pecker into his eye. So maybe there's a second lesson here. Wearing eye wear when aid climbing is sometimes a good idea.

That's gotta suck... If you're gonna have a piece smack ya in the face, too bad it wasn't a micronut or something. Good luck becoming a BWT, I'm practicing as well!

Further advice...when you get to hooking. on sketchy hooks don't look at them and don't lean back

Yeah, I'll never forget my hard earned lesson about bounce testing. Place a pecker in a thin seam (just off the ground) and gave it a slight tap to seat it. Pulled on it -- no problem. Clipped my aiders/daisey in and stood on it -- spooky, but it seems solid. Moved up on it and kept a close eye on it to see if it was going to hold, and POW!. Out it came. Smacked me right in the upper lip and split it in half, blood gushing everywhere. My buddies were around the corner (on a real climb) and heard the commotion. I had no choice but to tell them what happened, because they knew I was jacking around my some of my new gear. I've never been able to live it down. 'Til this day they love to tell the story about how they were there when I blew my first pecker. Sick bastards, I tell ya.

Playing with my first micro cam, I stick it in and it looked great until I sat on it then I slid down a short wall and was cought by my belayer that ragged me the rest of the day. So I'm leary about pro anyway now. I use it with TR but I back the hell out of everything. Nothing less than bomber squared.

Yeah, another "welcome" note to the club. I don't know how many times I've taken a blown piece right on the head, only to have the sucker smack harmlessly off my helmet. Love it. Keep your head down and bounce away.

sorry to hear about your prang with the No. 7 stopper but it does bring up that age old problem of stuff popping and where it lands. A friend of mine was on the South Face of Washington Column when a nut he was cleaning ripped and hit him straight in the eyeball. Temporary blindness ensued and his climbing partner took about 6hrs to get the pair of them off the route. he went to see an eye doc in town and now has a permanently expanded/open let eye. his depth perception is a bit screwed and he's far more sensitive to sunlight as well. i always put my hand over the piece I’m testing on lead but I’m also far more careful with cleaning. Bit unlucky but also a cautionary tale

take it easy

Shoot, I picked up to look down (eg away) from a piece that you're testing from Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills. I proved it when I was jacking around with some hooks. I tested it, it blew and there was a sharp thwap! as it hit my helmet.

I remeber a few years ago when the first set of aiders I purchased arrived in the mail. I just had to try the things. I pounded a nail in to an exposed 2x4 in the garage, stepped in to the aiders and then looking up went one step higher. WACK!!!!!...the biner slammed right in to the bridge of my nose. Ouch! The good news was that I learned that lesson after owning aiders for about 5 minutes.

dsfandas animation brings up another lesson. Never stand directly below the guy who is bounce testing. Or else you mightget squashed.

Nah...not Flash...just a very basic and crude little animated GIF. Playing when I should have been working. Glad it was worth a little laugh. :D
