greetings,
i'm finishing up at university and find myself wanting to live somewhere that has at least bouldering within 20 minutes (preferably in every direction, but i'll settle).
i'd also like to live in a place that has many other places to climb and backpack within weekend trip distances. currently, i'm in texas hill country, which, while amazing, is pretty isolated from everything else. and i'm just ready for a change of scenery. any thoughts?

Chattanooga, Tennessee. The only problem is you don't have any mountaineering, but you have awesome caving instead. Of course you have great sandstone climbing, granite over in North Carolina, and even Limestone up near Nashville. You have plenty of white water, mountain biking, and hiking. The town is also cheap to live in. The only problem would be finding a job.

You have to see Montana. I live in Helena, there is some fairly good climbing within 20 miles of my house. The views are fantastic all around for backpacking. Glacier National Park is a couple hours north for some beautiful country. If you love the outdoors like I do, then you will love Montana.

I'll toot the Salt Lake City horn. Lots of really good bouldering in Little Cottonwood canyon, 30 minutes from just about anywhere in the city. Then there's Joe's valley which is what, an hour or two from SLC(?) and is cropping up all kinds of new boulder problems.
Other places to climb: Little Cottonwood canyon, sweet granite cracks, phenomenal multi-pitch routes, and still a good share of bolted slab routes. Big Cottonwood Canyon, more sport routes on blocky, smooth quartzite rock. American Fork Canyon (45min.-1hr. from SL), steep limestone sport routes with sharp pockets and bolts galore. Rock Canyon, more quartzite and limestone, some great trad lines and sport climbs. Moab and Indian Creek about 5 hours away, 'nuff said there.
Backpacking: San Rafael Swell (2-3 hours from SL), one of my favorite places on earth. Secluded canyon backpacking and canyoneering. You can wander through the area for days and days. The High Uinta Mountains. Again, a lifetime worth of summer backpacking in alpine mountain locations with tons of lakes, great fishing, and the highest peak in Utah (King's Peak).
I think Utah is the greatest state in the U.S. but then I'm probably a bit tainted.

while i haven't ruled out grad school, i'm pretty burnt out right now. immediately, i'm probably going to pursue master's in teaching and then teach science and math at high school level.

Boulder would be a nice change of pace, or anywhere in Colorado's front range for that matter. Skiing within a half hour, continential divide, 54, 14,000 ft peaks in your backyard. Eldorado canyon 10minutes, boulder canyon/flatirons 10minutes. Mountainbiking possibilities are endless....what more could you want?

If you like ice climbing too, how bout the Northeast. We have the White Mountains, the Gunks, Acadia, Rumney, and several smaller crags with great bouldering. If you want rock climbing year round, it probably isn't the place for you, but makes a great Summer trip.

Riverside California.
Why you ask?
Simple, Boxsprings, no climbs there but it does have some nice small stuff as well as a one pitch wall in the back.
Mt. Rubideux has many short climbs.
Then another wall near Cajon Pass.
Stoney Point in Chattsworth.
Some out of the way local stuff in Rancho Cucumanga.
Plus at the top of Big Bear.
And not to forget Joshua Tree just an hour south.
Plus if your looking for longer drives, two hours to San Diego, and hour and half to PT. Magu.
Now that is just the climbing.
You mentioned hiking too. Well, lots of trails in Arrowhead, BigBear, Mt. Baldy, Santa Monica Mountains, Joshua Tree for desert hikes plus more.
We have it all in just the little basin that we live in.
The only this missing is good work. You have to commute to find a good job.
I'm one of the longer distance commuters. I travel 186 miles round trip everyday but most don't travel half that for good paying jobs.

Vegas. Bouldering, Sport, Trad, hiking, you name it. Not to mention many other destinations within 5-6 hours (J.Tree is only 3!) away.

Get out a map....
Highlight all the major and minor West Coast climbing areas you can think of...
Check the proximity of Las Vegas to those areas.
It's a pretty solid candidate for the best place to live in America if you are a climber.
Let me help you out a little.
Zion, Maple Canyon, Joe's Valley, Mecca, SLC Area, Virgin River Gorge, New Jack City, JTree, Owens River Gorge, The Happies, The Sads, Buttermilks, Red Rocks, Mt. Charleston, Mt. Potosi, Yosemite, Toulumne, Mammoth Lakes, blah blah blah blah, on and and on. Those are all I can think of off the top of my head but there are many many more.
ALL OF THOSE AREAS ARE WITHIN A FEW HOURS DRIVE OF LAS VEGAS!!!!!

I grew up in Boulder, if you can afford to live there and tolerate conjestion and yuppies, it's a great place. Otherwise, I'm partial to Bishop. Good luck!

no bouldering near redding, but there is climbing up there! San Diego has some good bouldering, and you can climb year round!
