My company is sticking me in SJ for about a month starting April. Can anyone recommend a good climbing gym or local spots to boulder? Partners? I also wanted to hit Yosemite for a weekend or two. What will the weather and picking up a partner be like? Jeremy

I have climbed at the Ironworks gym in Berkeley, it may not be the closest gym for you, but it is really nice. It is probably the biggest gym I have been to. There pricing is not bad either.

Planite Granite in Santa Clara is a good gym. I'm sure you'll find details in the regional info on rockclimbing.com. This new one may be an option too: http://www.touchstoneclimbing.com/tours_sj.html The weather in Yosemite can vary a lot most months. Certainly true in April. The last two years, I've been snowed on there in April. There's plenty of good climbing there in April though. But if one of your free weekends coincides with a snowstorm, you might want to go elsewhere.

You've got allot of great climbing optiosn. Planet Granite is in Santa Clara. Castle rock state park is in Saratoga. Look on the route database and get a guide book. Amazing bouldering and great climbing

Closest and best local gyms near San Jose are Planet Granite in Santa Clara and City Beach Rock Club in Fremont. For local climbing and great boldering head out to Castle Rock State Park above Saratoga. The weather is always great here compared to most places on Earth and Yosemite is accessible year round (my partner has been up there the past two weekends). Gotta love the Bay Area!!!! -Steve

In all reality, you come to one of the best climbing areas in the country. With in 4 hours you have Yosemite, and Lake tahoe climbing, and those are just the destination areas. If your only up for a quick day trip, you got tons of amazing climbing sites. The best climb I ever did was 60 feet off the ground, on a clear blue day. looked over my shoulder and just stared at the Pacific ocean breaking at 5 feet from my belayer. Man, this is the Bomb. Sport, Multipitch, trad, bouldering, sandstone, granite, volcanic, crimpy, slopey, pumpey, overhang, slabby. You name it, we've got it. It may never been as famous or best in class as say J-tree, Red rocks, etc... But the diversity of climbing is truly amazing and you've got some of the best weather in the country.

HAHa, That topo only gives a brief hint at what's available. Go get the Bruce morris guide book. You should probably get the sport guide book not the boulder guide. Most of the bouldering sites are in the bigger book. I'm moving away from the bay area and I'm already starting to feel withdrawl. 1 month in the Bay area and there no reason your climbing skills should not jump up a grade
