Hey all. I've looked around a bit trying to find some definite info and then I thought about asking the question here and maybe some more knowledgeable folks can help me out.
So I've heard of all the different places to climb in WV (Seneca, New River, Nelson's, etc.)
I was wondering which one I should try to go to for a trip down there in April. I'd be picking a friend up in DC and we can only top rope as of yet. So, we're looking for a place that's relatively close to DC (4 hour drive is fine) that also has pretty good top roping.

Most definetly go to Nelson, contact climbinganne for info. They have quite a few top rope possibilites, plus the via ferrata!!! Also franklin is a short drive away with some easy top-rope setups, but access is limited. Gotta check it out when you get there. I was just there and had 3 of the best climbing days of my life.

Want high exposure top roping? Go to Little Stony Man's point on Sky Line Drive. You cant have fires on sky line drive if you camp but there is free camping with fire pits down along the river in Luray. Also the drive from DC will only take you about 1hr 30 min.
[edit] this is in Va but just as beautiful and has easy access to set up TR.

Sugarloaf mnt. is outside Frederick Md. about 45 min. from dc. There is always carderock and great falls close to dc. Nelsons has some nice toproping,too.

The NRG is not really the best of options if you are still top roping. There are areas that are TR accessible (Bridge, JunkYard, even some of Endless) but you don't really get to enjoy the New at its full value. You could get a guide to take you around, but that will cost you some coin. Check out the other areas mentioned, and once you feel confident leading 9's and 10's head to the new and enjoy its full glory. The New is also closer to 5 hours from DC.

Whats wrong with tr ing the new??? The bridge butress has many climbs to Tr such as monkey see monkey do, jaws, chockstone, yo momma etc. Its a long way to drive, but there are plenty of places to set up a tr. I would reccomend places that are a lot closer in shanendoah though.

We spent a couple of days in the new top roping. There were a good number of areas to do so, however there are probably more easily accessible top roping locations in the state. Also we found ourselves drooling over all the sport and trad routes around. When I make it down there again I will definitely have at lest a sport rack with me.
