just wanted to pass on a tip that i got from a friend of mine (Rockman). You know those metal chinese dexterity balls that you roll around in your hands? they seem to actually help you. the trick is to not let them touch as you twirl them around - eventually you will get faster and better at it.

i recently started climbing again after 6 weeks off b/c i broke my hand, and found i was pretty much as strong as before i broke my hand (sans callouses unfortunately  ) and, while it could have been only due to my hangboard training, i think these dexterity things helped to some degree.

dont overdo it or your wrist will start to hurt.

Golf balls are a cheap alternative.

Golf balls are too light. They don't have the intertia to load your fingers for any reasonable workout. You need steel balls. And after you've used the steel balls for awhile, guess what? Lead. As in, lead balls, or it's you're lead, dude.

Oh, Yeah!

Rereads the topic line and then realizes his comment is not appropriate nor what the author meant

But for them twirly shiney things, yeah they are good for grip/endurance training and also for just messing around while watching TV. You can actually get quite the pump going with them if you do it long enough hehe.

"Chinese dexterity balls"

I thought you were referring to Ben-Wa balls for a moment...

That's a WHOLE different brand of dexterity altogether...

I've talked to numerous people about these things over the years, and they have all basically agreed on the following three things:

1) Basic level--balls touching, do it both clockwise and counter

2) Intermediate--same as 1, but balls don't touch

3) Advanced--same as 2, but do it without letting the balls make the chiming sounds (may not apply to the non-chiming models).

I don't care what you say - as soon as you add "chiming" to the mix, they _are_ Ben-Wa balls.

omg... a bunch of little kids here... i tried my hardest to make the title something so obvious that people wouldn't be able to make the obvious jokes, but i guess i failed... i think any title with "balls" in it is bound to be made fun of...

Balls of stone......(Movie Title?) ......Ironstone and marble, actually. I got mine at a mineral museum. They are a great warm up tool for oldies like me.

do these Chinese dexterity balls work better than my American fraidy-cat balls? my partner has been mentioning something for a while about me not having the right balls for some routes. not enough, or none, or some such problem, he thinks it limits my climbing, i should look into new balls, what about big viking balls, that might help.
