Heading to the valley for the summer, and was curious as to what some of you (PTPP especially, though not to slight the rest of you or anything) use for harnesses on walls. I have found that my Petzl is fine for most routes and have used it on everything except long-term hanging. any advice would be great. Matt

there was a topic on this not too long ago, and I believe the census was that Yates is the way to go. Personally, I am a HUGE Yates fan. good stuff. I own the Shield, and for hanging belays, I LOVE IT. The only way you could go better is with the Big Wall Harness, which has a bit more padding. I also own the Astroman for trad lines, which is super comfy for crappy belay stances and the occasional hanging belay. It's better than the Shield if you're doing a ton of free climbing, but wouldnt be as comfy on a big wall unless you were doing it in a day. I also understand that Misty Mountain makes some very comfortable big wall harnesses. I think several people here use them as well.

There was a thread on this line and I have to admit again that Yates has me hooked line and sinker. I have never been more confortable in a harness. I have the Shield.

I also have the yates shield, and love it. One suggestion though. I dont know how big you are, but if its a choice between the small and medium, go with the medium. I have the medium, and my cousin has the small. He was kind of upset that the small has two less gear loops than the medium and up, and they fit nearly identical.

You will be miserable in anything less than a true big wall harness. Multi-pitch trad harness doesn't equate with a good big wall harness. By the end of the first day you'll want to hang yourself with it. I have the Yates BIg Wall and my partner has a Yates Shield. Both are the sh!t. Ed

I have the Petzl corvalis. It's very comfortable and versitile but I don't like how the front of the belt moves. One side will push up, the other down. or both up or both down. It never stays in place. Very annoying. It doesnt matter how tight I pull it, the damn thing flaps around. Does anyone else experience this?? can I fix it w/ some velcro perhaps??

Would anyone care to compare/contrast the realtive ability of the Yates Shield and Big Wall harnesses to protect against the bruising that can occur on the tops of the hips due to overzealous top-stepping and/or hauling? I have the old-style Big Wall, with the fleece "padding," and I'm looking for something that's a little more, well, padded (as I sometimes tend to get overzealous). Thanks!
