the more you buy -- the better .. here is a list 1 set of nuts (pick your favorite brand) BD cams - at least 1 to 3.5 -- if you can afford more -- then get smaller ones too .. (alot of people like freinds in the smaller sizes -- i like BD down to .3 -- and haven't got anything smaller yet) tricams (.5 to 1.5 -- or more -- though these are the ones i place most) shoulder length slings and double length slings -- get several biners for slings locking biners -- (# depends on wether you'll do multipitch -- since you'll need to setup 2 anchors!) nut-tool a cordalette or webolette can be useful too when setting up anchors -- ricardo

All of it! no, seriously, maybe there should be a requirement to search first before you start any new thread. it certainly would be interesting.

Careful Grasshoper..... If you take the path of the trad you will become a gearhead. This will lead to you bank balance at 0. You will become excitied when you visit a climbing shop. You will become very good friends with you local climbing shoper owner who will let you know when the new shipment comes in. Just when you think you have enough gear, you will look again and realise you have no where near enough and have to get another set of nuts. Non climbing firends will not understand, climbing friends will envy you. One must tread carefully about becoming a trad climber as the next step is Aid climbing and in turn you bank balance will always be in the red, and in fact the local climbing shop will be your bank. But to those who move down the path, you will reach true freedom! (and people say I am not caring, no wait that was I am insane)

Dude, Get a set of Aliens (up to orange), some medium cams, maybe a big one or two. Add a full set of nuts, slings and loose biners and wha-la. You got a great foundation to work with. Have fun Melon
