In the last week I have had all my gear stolen from my 4wd then returned, care of the cops. So, question is: give me some non destructive ideas for marking my gear. P.S: does anyone know where I can buy a bear/lion/great white shark/Troll, that would fit into the back of my Hi-Lux?

I mark the webbing of my cams with my last name. (using a rope-safe marker) I use two strips of black tape on my biners. I put two stripes, using a black marker, on my nuts and hexes. My friends use: Zip ties Fingernail polish Electrical tape (various colors) Etc. We primarily mark our gear for easy sorting at the end of climbing trips. As well, I have everything I own listed on a spreadsheet and keep it organized on a sheet of pegboard when not in use. (This is bit of an overkill...but that's just me)

if you use tape, be sure to use a 2 or 3 colour combination. so you don't end up with 8 people all with yellow taped gear.... i also use nailpolish. i picture it going down like this: you: is that my draw? thief: no, it's mine you: is that your revlon #152 quickdry crystal navy blue topcoat? thief: (drops gear and runs away screaming) it could happen.....

Use caution when engraving!!! Alloys that are machined usually don't like deep scratches in them this could lead to weakening and cracking. I am sure a light engraving probably would not be a problem, but be sure you know what you are engraving and where.

Nail polish works well, if you just slobber it all on there.

I use a permanent marker, and put my initials on EVERYTHING!!! Hangerless - I also keep spreadsheets with value and quantity for all of my gear. And I also organize it on a pegboard. AW

I have TWO solutions for this issue; both of which are Effective and Quick. 1) I lay all my metal gear on pieces of newspaper and spray paint them annually. 2) I have a 130 lb MALAMUTE who insists that nobody will steal anything from me, unless they feed The DOG first...and the Dog's favorite FOOD is Thief arm. I'm gonna keep a list of my gear from now on Hangerless, maybe get it valued by the insurance company too. you ever considered hanging your socks on the peg board and keeping your gear in the draw? Putting initials on webbing would be a limited deterrant, it's quite acceptable and common to tie your webbing here and that makes it easy to replace Crazylikeafawkes, We put nail polish on my mates nuts, we had to hold him down and it took him ages trying to scrape it all off. Still, he's never had his equpitment tampered with(self inflicted tampreing dosen't count I reckon)so maybe it does work.I use black marker pen myself. I share Polarwid's caution re: engraving. We engraved my mates nuts once... Cliffhippo, if the tape works on ducks it should work ok on webbing. Thanks for all your input, keep it rolling in, I haven't found the perfect method of marking my gear yet. Boy, I envy dogs, They have it easy, just pee and sniff, all marked out. Heyyyyyy.....theres an idea [ This Message was edited by: socialclimber on 2001-12-20 19:57 ]
