Pete called quite a few people from El Cap during a storm last year. I was wondering what service he uses. Regardless, it's probably just an analogue signal. Ed

I get a pretty good signal in the Valley - AT&T digital. I called my sister from the top of Leaning Tower after we did WD a couple of years ago. The reception was pretty clear. You might not get good reception on the right side of El Cap and the Dawn Wall, due to the concavity of the wall. I also get service in Tuolumne.

Cell phone reception on El Cap is fine once you get up on the wall a ways. I've had good reception virtually everywhere all over the SW and the SE face. The only place I don't get good reception is at the base, especially around the Motel El Cap area. But I just walk out onto the huge boulder out and beneath El Cap Tree and get a good signal. As for what service I use, I have no idea! I just have my cell phone from Canada, and it picks up whatever the local service is. But I pay through the nose [not through The Nose] for the roaming fee. Ouch. Good thing it's a tax write-off, eh? Geez, yep - gotta call those clients.......

In reply to: this is the most disgusting thread I have yet to come across on this site. You mean to tell me it's worse than the "detatched finger due to climber falling while wearing a ring that happened to get stuck" thread? So cell phones may not be your thing but this isn't the Sierra Club. Climb your own climb. And smile a little :D

Tin cans on string work great no matter what terrain you're on. Note to jumaringjeff: you hit the nail square on the head with that joke. Kudos!

Probably not if you have Sprint. They suck. Everyone else I was with last week up there got reception on the friggin valley floor but my stupid Sprint service didn't pick up a signal til outside Fresno. Then again when I drove up to Lee Vining from LA a few months ago everyone else got cell service most of the entire drive and I didn't get service once we'd left Lancaster. But I was the only one with Sprint. DO NOT get Sprint, they suck for reception!!!

Oh, by the way bring an extra battery for the coffe machine and dishwasher. I would love to be rattled awake on pitch nine by a cell phone, wouldn"t you? Warren Harding would kick your ass

Sorry buddy You need to learn to deal with your own emergencies! Besides the truth about rescue's in Yosemite is- If you yell for help loud enough (especially on El cap)...they'll come save your ass! Anyone is welcome to chime in here, but what I've said is true. josh
