The giant hook is just in case I ever need a giant hook. I've used it on my slackline a lot, but I don't think I'll ever need it on any climb. It was free, so it's just there if I ever have use for it. Looking at punk's pic, I reallized I forgot the most essential tool for life anywhere. My knives are at http://www.morffed.com/knives.jpg if you care to see them. :D :D This post was a good idea. It's kinda fun. :D

Free Climbing Rack: Carabiners: 40 BD Hot Wires 36 Petzl Spirits (Straight Gate) 12 Petzl Spirits (Curved Gate 50+ DB D's 50+ BD Ovals 12 BD Nuetrinos 24-30 Assorted booty and unknown biners Passive Chocks: 2 Full Sets BD Stoppers 2 Full Sets Wc Rocks 12 Bd Brass and/or Steel nuts 6 HB Brass offsets 4 HB Brassies Double set Lowe Tri-Cams (Pink through Brown) Camming Units 3 Full Sets Aliens Blue thru Red 3 Full Sets Bd Camalots .5 thru 4 2 BD # 5 1 BD # 4.5 1 Full Set WC Rigid Friends 1 Full Set WC Flexi Friends Metolius 3-Cam Purple through Orange Software 24 Draws 12 12" Slings 12 24" Slings 4 4' Slings 2 "Rabbit Ear" Dynema Slings Plus dozens of other assorted pieces accumluated from 30 years of climbing. This is the "Main" free climbing Master-Rack that I use to create route specific racks. (people laugh at my triple & quadruple pieces untill they climb @ Indian Creek or similar areas!) Also, due to high levels of nuerosis, I almost always have double on my person on any given climb. My "What if I have to place a yellow alien but I've already used it?" fear is so absurd that I bring Three (3), because if I place one, then I only have two left and then what happens if a place the second and only have one left, I could end up reaching the anchor and I need two.................. Gear Paranoia taken to the max.....I am seeing a fine Dr who is helping me get over this affliction.

You know you are deep into climber land when a request for pics of "your rack" gets not even a single smirk, guffaw or teeheehee. Come on, am I the ONLY guy here who sees the joke here?

Here is an opinionated list of my recommendations. Sorry about some of the commercial nature of it but I wrote it after a few requests from potential customers who aske for opinions. Malcolm Malcolm’s Trad Gear Recommendations: Here are my fully opinionated recommendations for a trad gear rack: · Trango Nutz or Wild Country Rocks. BD stoppers are good, too: Smallest size up through the size of your big toe (#1 - #8?). Any bigger and they get weird. · RP's: #3 - #8 (#1-2 are good for aid only) · HB Offsets: #3 - #8 (#1-2 are good for aid only) · Tricams: #.5, #1, #1.5, #2, #5 (Sometimes I double up on the .5 – 1.5, but that’s just me. The #5 is un-popular with the masses but is probably the most useful nut I carry. Fits from 2˝” to 3˝” . Great for huecos. I never leave home without it.) · Hexes: Get the BD ones. Curved Hexes are lame. Size 1 - 5 slung on Tech Cord (I don't like the wired version). Small Hexes are nice in finger cracks but there is other stuff that works better. Just my opinion, but I don't carry any Hexes any more. · Cams: You can spend a lot of $ in this category. I usually carry: Full size range from pinky size through big hands (1/2” to 3 1/2") with doubles from 1" to 2 1/2 ". For most routes this will do. For desert cracks you may need 10-15 all of the same size! Model recommendations: o Trango FlexCams: Terrific value and terrific function. Lightweight and very easy to use. Go to http://www.trango.com/showitem.cfm?catnum=23&itemnum=148 for my spray about them and others. Doubled sling frequently eliminates the need for a quickdraw. o Black Diamond Camalots: Good cams but overwhelmed by hype. Smooth functioning but sometimes fumbly, Heavy and expensive. Expansion range is overrated. o Aliens: Nice in the 5 small sizes. Flexy cable makes them very stable but hard to get out. I usually carry 2-3 of the small ones. Don't bother with offsets. o Metolius: Popular U-frame cams. Well made but offer nothing that the Flex don't and are more $. Fat cams are nice for rotten desert rock but don't bother otherwise. o Wild Country: These are the best big cams (>than 4") on the market. Weigh 30% less than Camalots and are easier to place. Also the forged Friends are great value and very durable. I still climb with some original forged friends from the late 70's. Don't bother with offsets. o HB Cams: Well made but seem to be designed by someone who doesn’t use cams very much. o Tiny Cams: This is a category, not a brand. Be waaaay careful with these. They may seem secure but rarely are. Anything less than ˝” should be considered suspect. Small stoppers or BallNutz are usually better. · Carabiners: You need one carabiner for each cam or TriCam and one for every 4-6 wired nuts. Rack your wired nuts by size, not by model. Petzl Spirits are spendy but nice for racking wired nuts. 6 free straight gate 'biners. Bent gate ‘biners belong only on the rope end of your quickdraws. · Quickdraws: Bring anywhere from 6 to 25 of these. Rack straight gates on the top and bent gates on the rope end. Carry a variety of lengths. · Slings: 4 shoulder slings, each with 1 regular 'biner and 1 small locking 'biner on them. · Knife: I usually carry a tiny locking Gerber knife on a string around my neck. There have been tons of times that I've needed to cut an old sling out of a bolt or pin while hanging of one hand. The knife on a string trick let's you access it one-handed. · Flashlight: I never used to carry one but now that you can get those stupid little LED keychain lights there's no reason not to. They don't weigh anything and you can keep them in the pocket of your chalkbag. Make sure it's somewhat water proof and has a switch that lets it stay on.
