I was looking at the manual for my reverso the other day and it said that it'll work work with 10-11 mm ropes. So my query is, will the reverso work ok with a 9.7mm? I ask only because Im planning on buying a 9.7 BlueWater Lightning Pro for leading hard stuff. Edit: or maybe I could just go ahead and put another biner onto the device

That is, and I hate to say this, Petzl being mother for you. Yes you can use it, you just have to be more attentive because the skinnier rope will not lock off as securely as a 10.5 or an 11mm rope. Otherwise, they wouldn't recommend it for use with doubles 8-9mm in diameter. Just be a good belayer and you will be just fine.

actually, the Reverso is rated for use with 10-11mm single ropes AND 8-9mm half/double ropes. It is NOT rated for use with 7mm TWIN lines. so, while Petzl would not recommend it, the Reverso will work on a 9.7 line. Just be attentive to line thickness.

Looking at the Reverso instruction booklet it also says that "This product must only be used by competent and responsible persons"

As with any belay device (grigri, reverso, etc.) just keep your hand on the brake at all times and you will not have a problem.

Petzl released an update to its reverso instructions a little while ago. This was concerning diameter of ropes to use when using the reverson in the autolocking orientation. I belive the rope must be >8.5mm but you should check out the petzl web site to make sure. I have used an 8.8mm sterling and had no problems with lead belay or autolocking directly off the anchor.

Right, I kinda assumed that such a small difference is not really an issue as long as one is paying attention. Thanks for the tips though, chaps.
