Hi fellow women...

I will probably be on my period this weekend and I'm going climbing... typically, I avoid climbing while menstruating, because of the hygiene issues... but I might not be able to avoid it this weekend... does anyone have any tips on how to deal, esp on multi pitch routes? Any beta would be appreciated... feel free to PM...

Thank you

...keep the used girly items in a zip lock bag with a used tea bag in it for the smell. I've never tried it multipitch, but it works for camping...

How many pitches are you doing? This is a pretty difficult thing to deal with. If you don't think you'll need to pee en route, just put a tampon in before you go. If you're doing lots of pitches, sometimes I just go au natural. However, I'm not a heavy bleeder, so it's not too bad. I couldn't imagine trying to deal with tampons mid route, but I'm sure it's possible. Guess you have to wear pants with pockets that are secure to carry you necessities, trash and maybe a baby wipe packet. Good luck.

I recomend instead or the keeper You won't have to change them as often (you can go up to 12 hours) as you would tampons, and there isn't a risk of TSS.

I've not used the Keeper, but I have used Insteads...you can wear them for 12 hours and they work great!

The insteads looked super hard to put in right...
And wouldn't you have to pack them back out as well??

They aren't hard to put in at all...it took me one or two times for practice, then it was cake.

You would have to pack it out, but you'd have to pack out the tampons/pads (don't know what you use) as well...These are smaller, can be washed out and easily stored without mess. :D

I've done the packing out of the usual kinds of things...its yucko. Especially for a several day trip and trying to be discreet about it. I learned to layer so I could hide the bag of used ones. EUW is right.

Not to be grody, but is there a problem with animals smelling what you dump out?

That one, I don't know...I wouldn't think it would be too bad if they were sealed in a few baggies. Depends on how far back in 'the country' you were planning on going I suppose.

what type of multipitch are you going to be doing? hanging belays?

any multipitch i've ever done has had some sort of ledge system that i could have a pee/change the pad break.

oh and wear dark pants. you don't need the "am i overflowing" question breaking your climbing concentration!!!

If you're on the pill you can just bypass the whole event and skip it for the month. It's perfectly safe. When you finish your active pills just start a new pack instead of taking the dummy pills. You'll skip it for the entire month. (It will return to normal once you start the dummy pills again.) perfect for camping trips or other vacations. (I think that the FDA is about to approve a pill that makes you have IT only four times a year - yippee!)

I've done that before and would never do it again...my system just plain revolted! I don't normally get cramps and was on the floor in agony not to mention what happend the next month...ick! Talk about overflow...
I hate taking the pill period (no pun intended  ), but the four times a month thing makes me think your body would just back up...

heh. I was just thinking that was reason enough to go on the pill. then again, since I switched to instead and have to change it less offften my period isn't quite as much of a hassle.

I've liked being on the pill...the one I'm on lessens my cramps SO much, and I bleed less (sorry for being gross).

You have to find the right one though. I know people who have gotten worse cramps. For me though, I used to be out of commision with cramps one day a month. My bf didn't know what to do the one time because I was reduced to a curled up lump of whimpering me at his place, so he ran out and got me painkillers. Now, I just feel a little weird one day a month. I haven't even gained weight or anything.

But I'm leery of trying to skip a period...I'm afraid that gretchino's experience will happen.

Gretchen's experience sounds awful. I've only had good experiences with that method. I've done it seven or eight times without any problems. My OBGYN actually recommended it to me when I was complaining about the lousy timing of spring break during college. I like it because it gives me control and I don't think twice about planning vacations or activities. It's definitely worth considering - but then again I've never had problems with cramps. You could try it once and see. (Gretchen - did things go back to normal after that month?)

What pill are you on if you don't mind me asking? I think it differs depending on the pill and the hormone levels of each pill, whether it will work well.

A double ziplock with a little baking soda or kittie litter (for odor/moisture) in it and a couple OB's will fit into the little pocket at the bottom of your chalkbag.

I do it all the time and have never had any issues whatsoever! I've always been on the pill and never had any cramps or any other issues at all. Skipping it is best and, no I dont' think there will be "overflow" issues because you're body doens't even build up the lining that you are shedding if you skip it. That's waht the hormones do, convince your body not to ovulate at all, so if you just keep taking it you have no fear of things "building up" or whatever. Most people who are on depo (the shot) never get their periods at all and they are just fine.

hmm, talk to your doctor about this first .. i completely screwed up my cycle and ended up spotting for three weeks because i did this. learn from my screw-up: being able to skip the dummy pills honestly depends on what all is in those pesky little active pills.

as for how to deal. i use tampons without an applicator and a zip lock baggie. i also wear pants with a zipper pocket for the baggie and any spare tampons. i agree with fawkes that there should be a ledge system for safety/comfort.

also, if you're reasonably confident that you'll have to change en route, then i would encourage you to discuss it with your partner. you dont have to be graphic, just tell him/her that you need some privacy. (guys dont want to know about it anymore than we want to discuss it. ;))

as an example, though, i had an ovarian cyst burst shortly after climbing a tower last fall with a first-time partner, and when i told him that i was having some female troubles and needed some privacy, he responded quickly and respectfully.
that's my .02,
amber
