I was there May 10, 2015, and I saw several signs by each climbing area there at Little Stony Man cliffs that stated
In reply to: "Area closed to off-trail use within 30 yards to either side of sign. Violators are subject to fines and/or arrest. Thank you for helping to protect fragile resources." There were a few more signs near the climbing walls saying the same thing. I asked two climbers if they knew if it meant no climbing. They said they didn't know, but they knew that many websites (like this one perhaps) and many published books state you can climb Little Stony Man cliffs. I'll try to call the park service to ask them, because many websites and publications and outdoor book sellers will need to correct their publications if climbing is banned there. Also, the national park service there looks like they may need to change their own web page about rock climbing: http://www.goshenandoah.com/...-climbing-rappelling

I emailed both Shenandoah National Park service and a guide company that says they guide climbs at Little Stony Man Cliffs (http://www.goshenandoah.com/...-climbing-rappelling) and they didn't give me specific info about Little Stony Man cliffs, but they did explain why those endangered plants on the rock faces around the park are being protected:
In reply to: ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: SHEN HQ Info Desk, NPS <shen_hq_info_desk@nps.gov> Date: Mon, May 11, 2015 at 9:07 AM Subject: Re: From NPS.gov: Is rock climbing banned at Little Stony Man this year? Rock climbing has not been banned in Shenandoah National Park, but it does have new restrictions because of R.O.M.P. -- the Park's rock outcrop management plan. The R.O.M.P. is the Park's effort to protect some fragile and rare plant species that only grow in rocky areas. Here is a link to the page on our website about rock climbing and guidelines for same in the Park: http://www.nps.gov/...it/rock-climbing.htm The signs you saw and photographed most likely were alerts to the R.O.M.P. restrictions. We cannot notify every website and website manager that refers or links to the Park, but we do try to get the word out about restrictions, etc. as best we can, via our own website, our own Facebook page, our own Twitter account, and via press releases. You are certainly welcome to refer any websites you regularly use to the Park's website and other Shenandoah National Park info channels when you see information on them that conflicts with the Park's. I hope this helps, and that your upcoming trips to Shenandoah National Park are safe and enjoyable. Sincerely, Patressa -- Lisa J. Taglauer Secretary, Office of the Superintendent Shenandoah National Park 3655 US HWY 211 E. Luray, VA 22835 540-999-3500X 3400 -- Park Ranger Shenandoah National Park Headquarters Front Desk 540.999.3500 ex. 3397 Here's the response I got back from the guide company that specifically state they guide climbs at Little Stony Man on their website (http://www.goshenandoah.com/...-climbing-rappelling): ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: <tprice1@delawarenorth.com> Date: Mon, May 11, 2015 at 10:49 AM Subject: Rock Climbing - Contact ID:8245929 We do not know where the Guide take the rock climbers as they base it on their experience levels. I am not sure what Park Service has posted but our guide is contracted through us and we have to get approval through the National Park Service. Perhaps, the sign means that an individual can not proceed to do the rock climbing unless you are under supervision of our guide. You may want to contact the Park Service for more details in regards to their sign. Kind Regards, Tasha Price Reservation Specialist Delaware North at Shenandoah

On the National Park Service Website, in their link to their Rock Climbing brochure (pdf file), it states that there are permanent closures at Little Stony Man cliffs and shows a little map of those closed areas (http://www.nps.gov/...egulations-Final.pdf):
In reply to: Permanent Closures •Little Stony Man Cliffs -- All off-trail areas on Little Stony Man located south of a line placed 28.3 yards (35 meters) north of the Chute Trail (Figure 1) are closed to visitor use. The large boulders on the northernmost end of Little Stony Man cliffs between the A.T. and Passamaquoddy Trail are also closed.

Who does the math for that department? A yard is shorter than a meter.
