We continue to enhance Rockclimbing.com every week. As part of that effort, we are trying to figure out what we can change with the Frontpage. We already have some ideas on what to change but we are looking for input from the users into what you want. Here is what we are thinkging about. My FrontPage. This new feature will allow you to customize the look and the content of the frontpage when you login to Rockclimbing.com. The idea is to create several modules that you can Add, Modify or Delete kind of like how you do My Yahoo! You can list recent posts from your favorite Forums. You can change the order of certain modules like move the Photos down and the News up. You can have Favorite Links to various pages. So as you come to the front page, what is the first few things that you find yourself clicking on? What do you want to change or modify? Finally, this takes professional programming and honestly doesn't result in any direct revenues at all. So the last question is would you be willing to donate money to help finance this? If everyone wants it, but no one would be willing to pay for it, then we may consider making other enhancements that people would be willing to pay for.

I always check out the recent messages box, the picture is usually worth a glance. Other than that, I don't look at the front page, Its straight to the forums. I pretty much think the layout is fine as is, but the modules idea is good though I don't think its neat enough to warrant paying for.

I have never customized a page on any site I've visited that supported it. If the site has useful content then the standard page without customization has been fine. I think that will be the case here too where the information is useful and customizing the page would be eye candy. Dave

For WHOs ONLINE, just go to the MAIN FORUM PAGE, and scroll to the bottom, and a list of everyone online is down there.

Yeah, but there's no support for Friends, etc. and that was kind of a cool feature that I miss. Trev and I talked about it today; it will be coming back. I guess what the real question here is, How would you make rc.com better?? The Who's Online functionality is now a shoe-in for coming back; it's good to know that our judgement is not completely screwy... One reason the "my rc.com" idea came up, was that some people (eg. Trevor and I, among others) don't really have time to monitor all of the forums that we'd like to, least of all when the forums don't echo to the front page. So Trevor started coding away on a "favorites" feature to allow entire forums to be tagged as "watchable". That way if people wanted to look for partners in a regional section, or if someone was waiting for an answer to an aid question (or waiting for an aid question to answer), they'd have an easy and defined set of steps to take -- drop by rc.com, look at front page, no PMs? no Favorites activity? OK on with the day, then... There have also been many statements to the effect that RC.com's homepage is a bit too busy and intimidating for first-time visitors. That's a drag, and even more of a drag is when people say "nah I just go straight to the forums" because those are the people that are most likely to benefit from reading any announcements on the front page (eg. "We implemented the spell checker you asked for, use the 'speling' button", "We are re-indexing the forums, they will be slow from 7-9pm tonight"). Also, the surveys/polls on the front page are a great tool for prioritizing work -- we'd like to focus on the most desirable functionality first. So if there's a compelling way to make using the front page EASIER than going straight to the forums, or straight to photos, or straight to PM's, then it would be EXTREMELY desirable to hear how. I built a mock-up of how I thought the FP could be made less intimidating for the 94% of our referrals that stream in directly from Google. If we have a highly usable front page, then potential Media Partners like the Access Fund can rest assured that any criticisms of their organization will be answered in a public fashion, for open debate. And if it's easier for people to navigate the site, I think the influx of new blood and fresh faces will help to make the site a more vibrant community. It is great to see the regulars pipe up, but also pleasant is to see someone new making a valuable contribution to the discussion. It'd be nice for people to feel like they actually are in charge, to some degree (and we'll address some changes to make that a binding reality, in another upcoming thread). Thanks, as always, for your comments and time. --t

it would be nice to have some of the most recent posts that we made so that we can see if they have been replied to yet without having to go to all the forums or getting your e-mail box flooded other than that it is great!

Trevor, Honestly, I don't think that a "my frontpage" effort is something I would spend money on. Just my opinion though. Curt

First and foremost on my improvements list is the ability to reach my profile and my pictures with only one click on the sidebar. Second would be to add a few more of the latest posts to the front page, because I never have the desire to go browsing through all those forums for posts. I just view them on the front page, and if there were 20 or 25 instead of 15, that would be an improvement. Other than that, I can't think of anything at the moment. I'll post again if something comes to mind. And if I had an income at all, I would be glad to donate, but I can't even pay for a candybar every now and then, much less help to keep this site running. Thanks for all the hard work to keep this place here for us.

Hey all. I like the idea of being able to see if there's replys to your recent posts. Also I like the idea for friends/who's online on the front page. (Maybe a popup you can enable/disable.) Also I have to admit, on my first visit I was a little intimidated by the front page, there just seems to be too much stuff on the left. *pause for air* The recent thread on bringing back the age in profiles I agree with, and last but not least... FIX THE ASCENTS ALREADY!!! It's been driving me nuts. (Got all that? :?) :D

That's another thing... perhaps you should recover completely from the latest upgrades before doing anything else major.

I had to go back to look at the front--my memory's a sieve... I usually scan the most recent, but I like the idea of having our own thread-sheet, as often I'm not necessarily quick enough to catch older threads I'm watching. My email link to topic replies notification doesn't seem to work anymore, which lends a finger to the side of the scale 'custom menu' rests on. I was a member awhile before I even thought of 'articles', as the 'featured...' one is off the bottom of my screen, (under voting for tweaks, which I haven't tried. ) There are some good ones, which provide info that often answers the redundant questions in many topics. Maybe this could be enhanced, or list a few 'featured' or new articles as they come in. I want to kick down anyhow, cause I am a regular visitor here and totally appreciate the availability, info, and chance to correspond with so many other climbers. It's fun and I learn lots here. I would be happy to see some of that go to a custom FrontPage, as long as the more basic skeletal needs are met. Kudos for the work you guys do to provide this site for all of us 8) Peace, -p

For USERS (signed in) I would love to see a MY... Section.
[*:f50232747f] My Posts (which already exists, but you have to get there thru the forums, right now) [*:f50232747f] My Profile [*:f50232747f] My State (somehow use our info, so we could check out our home state in the Dbase by a click of the mouse. [*:f50232747f] My Photos [*:f50232747f] OTHER MY FEATURES???
(I know all these features exist already, but moving them all the FP in a concise location would simplify my RC.com habits.) Can't really think of anymore MY things... anyone else have more they'd like to contribute? But i do agree with someone's observation, I think some of the current problems should be fixed before the FP gets changed. Among others, the list of Forums in the state pages of the DB...could they be changed to the new PHP look? Or alteast the old folder system be used so we could see which have been replied to (currently, the newest replies, don't even surface to the top of the list...you just have to keep count of the # of replies.)

Well, we agree too... anyone who wants to work on the code, feel free to drop me a PM and I'll set you up with FTP and CVS access... As for Trevor and I we tend to work on the most-demanded and most-likely-to-produce-revenue aspects of the site. One of the reasons the front page is a good candidate is that, if it's well suited to what people come here for, we have a good place to put announcements, sponsors' statements, surveys, and the like.

In reply to: In reply to: We continue to enhance Rockclimbing.com every week. hahahahahhaha my phat *ss Actually, Tim or I or both make a change ot the code everyday. Whether it's a bug fix, new enhancement, or database maintenence, we are upgrading something. The problem is that with about 20 different sections of Rockclimbing.com it's hard to notice ALL the changes that we make. Hey, but it the appreciation I get from genuine people like you, that make all of this worth it. Thanks, Trevor P.S. plonk!
