I am new to this, and live in Wisconsin. I too am a little confused about the terminology and would like to know what type of climinb i am doing. My husband and i go out to cliffs from 40 to 70 feet, anchor at the top, then climb up cliff using nothing other than the rope (attached to my harness) and a belaying device. We don't put anything into the rock-- just use what is there! Is this top roping?? or something else... Please help me out!! Rebekah

Yep. Sport climbing would be on a route where there are bolts in the rock, but you drag the rope up with you and clip in as you go along. Trad (traditional) climbing is where you place your own protection (pro) into the rock, then clip into it. A lot more expensive and generally requires greater skill. "Free" climbing just means anything climbed without the use of aiding devices. Those were my biggest confusion points when I first started. HTH.

something that confused me when i started: free climbing = climbing without using devices to aid your upward progress free-soloing = climbing without a rope or any sort of protection devices
