what do you say to people who claim that climbing is not a sport? If golf or fly fishing is a sport, I say climbing is too! what other sport can teach one to hold all your weight over your forearms?

Sports are about rules and customs and competition. If that's how you engage in the activity, then it is a sport.

I once read a quote by E. Hemmingway, I can't remember it word for word, but it went something like... There are only 3 true sports in the world, mountain climbing, bull fighting, and racecar driving, all the rest are just games. I thought that was pretty cool.

Of all the things to discuss on here, this has got to be the dumbest thing I have read....Who cares if climbing is an activety, sport or physics experiment. You are climbing up a rock, man. Don't get to worried about what you call that.

It can go either way. There are rules, records and competions, but for myself I climb for the joy of it.

Tell them... "No.. climbing is not a sport. Tell all your friends, family and co-workers to not even bother because there are no rewards or satisfaction involved. Tell everyone they should stay at home and watch TV" This way we'll get on the environmentalists good side by keeping more people out of the climbing areas.

Oh, I dunno, if you're going to say that things like baseball and football are sports, I'd be just as happy calling it something else. Climbing far exceeds all other recreational pursuits in my opintion simply because I enjoy it more. I think deeper analysis might make for entertaining arguments, but if someone wants to stand in a field waiting for a little ball to come flying their way, or find meaning in whether a ball goes over your line or mine, that's great. Less crowds for me. Just tell them they're right, climbing is a dangerous activity performed by "Xtreme sports" wackos or granola munching luddites who are all gonna end up falling to their deaths Real Soon Now anyway. Real Men engage in sports on the couch, in front of their TV, doing the occasional 12 ounce curl. Yeah, I'd have to say I don't much care if people who don't climb think climbing is a sport or not. I think my life is richer for the hours I've spent on the rocks, and that's good enough for me.

If rules, competition and records make an activity a sport, then video pachinko is a sport. And so is Donkey Kong. And so is quilting. And for that matter, baseball is neither a sport nor an activity. At any given time, 7 out of ten players on the field are comatose.

Sport: Any physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. (source: www.dictionary.com) physical activity? definitely rules? not really customs? i guess so, if you think of it that way My question is, what does it really matter whether its a sport or not? I could personally care less. It doesn't make it any more or less worth doing. In fact it doesn't change it at all. Activities determine language, not the other way around. Being a sport does not lend more or less credibility to an activity, even if it is cheerleading or video pachinko (no idea what that is), or even Donkey Kong.
