No tengo dinero, so I'm looking for a cheap fix to hold me over... anybody ever try wrestling shoes (like Asics) to climb in? Have you climbed in any other "substitutes" between paychecks?

The other day at the gym I didn't have my shoes with me, only a pair of tight fitting hiking boots, they worked quiet well, they didn't slip around my feet on small holds like running or tennis shoes. I climbed alot of the things that I usually could.
On rock however I don't know if it would be ok or not.

Go to www.barrabes.com, and check out their great prices on climbing shoes. Shipping is about $12 or less; the Tenaya shoes are great, and very inexpensive. Probably cheaper than wrestling shoes, and better for the job of climbing.

This boy that I was instructing one summer refused to climb in climbing shoes and only used those wrestling shoes you are talking about. It doesn't seem like they work too well at all. If you need cheap shoes, see if one of your friends can hook you up with a prodeal, you could look into used climbing shoes, and many online stores sell cheap ones. Good luck!

i dont think water shoes would work to well. they are not really strong they bend really eaisly and stretch a ton.

My friend has 3 pairs of climbing shoes. And one pair includes wrestling shoes. He likes them because they are really comfortable. He buys the re-sole kit and puts rubber from the toe of the shoe to the end of the ball. They seem to work well for him.
I got my first pair of climbing shoes for $50 because they discontinued that specific model. Maybe you could look at your local store for deals like that.

i have climbing hsoes but some of my friends thiunk i'm insane spending over $100 for shoes. they say i should buy water shoes. i mean i think they would work, u could get a resoling kit and just resole them, then they would stick and are probably more comfy.

I've tried a number of alternatives when I've either been broke, the shoes have been getting resoled or I just forgot to pack them:
1. Wrestling shoes. Comfortable, protect feet well, very flexible. Grip sucks, high-top or 3/4-top restricts some ankle movement. Cracks tear them up quickly.
2. Water shoes. Better grip. Worse on just about everything else, they slide around too much on your feet, fair for slab though.
3. Barefoot. Actually I do this sometimes even when I've got my shoes. My feet are kinda "sissy" though so I only do it on pretty smooth slab routes. Grip on slab is excellent, but chalking them is awkward (and necessary on hot days). Can't edge at all though and the toes get to hurtin' on longer routes too.

That's a great idea on resoling either water shoes or wrestling shoes!! Good call, never thought of that, but it sounds like a pretty good plan.
...Except...
If you're going to buy some wrestling shoes for $40 or $50 and then have some Stealth rubber thrown on there for $35, you might as well have just gone w/ some cheap climbing shoes. There are some links to some websites in the "Check Out This Website" forum that have incredible deals on shoes. My personal favorite is www.sportextreme.com.

I just recently bought Five Ten Cesium. They are an approach shoe but have a rubber toe and they have great traction and they are also good for bouldering. You can buy them for 49 bucks at mgear.com

Try gearexpress.com, they have five-ten xrays (2000) and rock socks for $59 each, plus shipping is only $5 in US. You'll also probably get the shoes in 3 or 4 days.

MY2 cents: I know people who freesolo 5.11 in their frikkin
BIRKENSTOCKS. Sort of makes all this fuss about which cool new shoe is the best to buy, and whether you should use an anasazi on the left foot and a viper on the right foot seem sort of ridiculous, don't it?? All the tech weenie talk abt shoes sometimes makes me wanna
Moral; you can climb in just about anything. It does tend to tear the hell outta your tennies, but you can definitely climb.
